NTVDM.EXE + SETUP.EXE PATH DOES NOT EXIST
I have tried to install on my D820 (Pentium Duo Core) 16-bit applications like SIEMENS SIMATIC PLC software and similar. By clicking on setup.exe I get the following error message:
:\SETUP.EXE The specified path does not exist. Check the path and retry
Additionally, during the XP-Shutdown, I get another message:
NTVDM.EXE - APPLICATION ERROR
Application not correctly initialized (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application
On the Task Manager several NTVDM.exe tasks are running simultaneously. I have tried:
- copy
No Events found!

.... sorry, the message was sent incomplete by mistake
I have tried:
- to start setup.exe from the hard disk
- renamed setup.exe into e.g. install.exe
no way. I read in the past topics that other people experienced this issue on Intel Duo Core based PCs.
Can you tell me if someone has found out a fix for this?
Thanks

What I have tried so far:
-Windows XP Repair install - changed the error message, but did not fix.
-"SFC /SCANNOW" at a command prompt (System File Checker) - seemed to work on 1 of the 5 systems we've unboxed so far, but after several restarts it was back to its old tricks, so it may have been a coincidence that this helped. Several other machines have had no positive reaction to running System File Checker.
-Copied a known-good ntvdm.exe from my D610 - same error message.
-Ended all processes in task manager one by one, trying a 16 bit application after each one to see if that process has been interfering with ntvdm.exe - no change in the error message.
-Ran Hijack This to see if there were any registry entries that were unfamiliar to me that may be causing problems - nothing that I could find.
-Formatted and reinstalled Windows and system software from scratch. The error message has not returned on that machine after a clean install of Windows.
I will let you know if I come up with a fix without reinstalling Windows.

So the root of the problem is this software. If, like our company, you won't be using many of the TPM/fingerprint reader features, or can live without them, uninstalling the software won't hurt anything and will let you run 16-bit applications again.
