NTVDM.EXE + SETUP.EXE PATH DOES NOT EXIST

I have tried to install on my D820 (Pentium Duo Core) 16-bit applications like SIEMENS SIMATIC PLC software and similar. By clicking on setup.exe I get the following error message:

:\SETUP.EXE The specified path does not exist. Check the path and retry

Additionally, during the XP-Shutdown, I get another message:

NTVDM.EXE - APPLICATION ERROR
Application not correctly initialized (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application

On the Task Manager several NTVDM.exe tasks are running simultaneously. I have tried:
- copy

.... sorry, the message was sent incomplete by mistake

I have tried:

- to start setup.exe from the hard disk

- renamed setup.exe into e.g. install.exe

no way. I read in the past topics that other people experienced this issue on Intel Duo Core based PCs.

Can you tell me if someone has found out a fix for this?

Thanks

Try running it using compatability mode.

Right click on the setup.exe file, choose "Properties", then select the Compatability Tab.  Put a check mark in the box next to "Run this program in compatability mode for:", then select appropriate operating system.  Probably Windows 95 or Windows 98/Me.

Hope this helps

This is exactly the problem I am having with our first batch of D620's purchased for our company (Core Duo 1.83ghz). It seems to happen with any 16-bit applications, such as running sysedit.exe to edit system files, or several other installation programs we use that are 16-bit.

What I have tried so far:
-Windows XP Repair install - changed the error message, but did not fix.
-"SFC /SCANNOW" at a command prompt (System File Checker) - seemed to work on 1 of the 5 systems we've unboxed so far, but after several restarts it was back to its old tricks, so it may have been a coincidence that this helped. Several other machines have had no positive reaction to running System File Checker.
-Copied a known-good ntvdm.exe from my D610 - same error message.
-Ended all processes in task manager one by one, trying a 16 bit application after each one to see if that process has been interfering with ntvdm.exe - no change in the error message.
-Ran Hijack This to see if there were any registry entries that were unfamiliar to me that may be causing problems - nothing that I could find.
-Formatted and reinstalled Windows and system software from scratch. The error message has not returned on that machine after a clean install of Windows.

I will let you know if I come up with a fix without reinstalling Windows.

Figured it out. On the machine that I had reformatted, I had installed everything except for the Embassy software for the trusted platform module, as this was not included on the CD's Dell sent with the machines. After downloading this and installing it, I was back to the same old error messages. Uninstalled- and they're gone. Uninstalled the Embassy software on our other D620's, and likewise, the error messages were gone on those machines as well.

So the root of the problem is this software. If, like our company, you won't be using many of the TPM/fingerprint reader features, or can live without them, uninstalling the software won't hurt anything and will let you run 16-bit applications again.

Excellent catch. It just worked on a new d820. Dell support is aware of it now too as I used your method while on hold with them. They wanted me to use a win2k pro article to edit the registry. Yikes.
