I regularly check the Dell site and install the critical and recommended drivers

Isn't there a way to decipher the Microsoft error message to enable one to home in on which driver might have a problem? Anyway, couldn't it be hardware?

well if you are getting regular BSOD then the best thing to do is uninstall All drivers and then restart and reinstall them, drivers are one of the most computing headaches as sometimes they can be buggy, install incorrectly or become corupt.

Try that and see if that sorts out the problems.

I have found a DMP file that might have some useful information but I can't open it to post the details. Any ideas?

I updated this two days ago - rotten thing caused windows to ask for re-activation!!!!!!!

That was also the last time I recorded an unexpected windows shutdown. (I don't know if the BSOD occured before or after). This problem is so random that it may not happen for another week.

The only other clue I can give is that no one has ever witnessed the blue screen as it happens after a period of no user activity (hence no-one is around). All I ever see is the error message that "windows has recovered from an unexpected error". When I check for solutions on line it tells me nothing.

Bill,

I was going to download and install both the patches you have indicated. I don't want to get off the track but I have run into another problem since I downloaded and installed the latest Intel Storage and Matrix manager update from the Dell site. My copy of Vista is no longer seen as genuine by Microsoft because of this and hence I can't get any updates or patches. I could not activate on line because it said the product key was already in use. I was able to activate via phone which seemed to work but now two days later it wants me to activate again. I need this problem sorted before I can fix the BSOD issue. HELPPPPPP

No. I installed the Intel Matrix thing on Wednesday and haven't been able to install anything from Microsoft since. I'll do the phone activation again and see if it lasts more than a day. Problem is my computer tells me that Vista is activated but the online validation checker says I am not

OK Bill, I think I have sorted out the windows activation thing. The story on how to do that is here http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=vista&thread.id=36524

Now, that I am genuine again I have been able to download both the patches you recommended. The first regarding waking from sleep wouldn't install because it said it wasn't applicable. OK, I didn't think it sounded like my problem anyway. But I have installed the micr code update. I hung on the first restart but started ok the second time. I'll wait and see if anything improves from this point.

PS - to anyone thinking of installing the Intel storage update - don't!
