Old Network Login

Whenever I boot up my PC I am prompted to log on to our firm's long-defunct Exchange Server. I have to enter my own password and then I learn, as I did then, that Windows can't find that server, and if I wanted to continue (of course I did!) I would just have to work off-line. Duh. The reason it could not find the server back then was pretty obvious: the computer could not access it until I dialed in, but dialing in is not possible until the computer is fully booted up. Sort of a Catch-22. We used to access our firm's network through a dialup connection, but that entire prcess was abandoned 6 months ago in favor of access through the internet which is far more convenient. Unfortunately, the logon remains as an inconvenient artifact.

This logon process, apart from being an absurdity, slows down the bootup process, which I have to do a lot since my computer crashes a lot. How can I get rid of this issue?

I'm not clear yet as to whether you're running Outlook/Exchange or not. In any event, the way to eliminate this is to check your startup settings and remove the offending program, either the network re-connection or Outlook/Exchange.

THanks. We were running Exchange Server until about 6 months ago. I was not running it on my home office (remote) computer, of course, but had configured OL2000 for Workgroups. I was able to synchronize Outlook with a quick telephone dialup, but navigating our network for anything else was painfully slow. I have since unistalled OL on my home office machine and then reinstalled it for stand alone operation. We no longer use Exchange Server at all, at least for any remote communications. We use something called Microsoft Terminal Server, accessed through the internet using a high-speed connection, and I can navigate our network from my home office--or anywhere in the country with a high speed internet connection--as handily as I can navigate my own machine.

I checked Startup (run: msconfig) and can't see anything obviously related to a network or dialup connection. There is nothing in Dialup Networking--I deleted the old connection long ago. There must be some configuration for Windows Me that I made years ago that must now be undone.
