in my experience, vista's installation has actually been surprisingly quick. i'm not entirely sure what would be causing it to hang like that, but i am sure there is someone more knowledgeable who may be able to give you an answer.

If your doing a clean install it will take longer than an upgrade. A clean install for me took around 1 hour. The screen does go black its part of the installation process.

Hi TyronneG
From what i have read here it takes less time to do a clean install fact is i know it does take less time to clean install over a upgrade !
A clean install only takes about 35 minutes where if i do a upgrade it takes a lot longer if you have lots of software installed on your computer the install has to deal with that software plus the software that windows has to put on your computer !
One of my computers took over 2.5 hours
to do a upgrade where on the same computer it only took about 35 minutes to do a clean install !
And the amount of ram you have less makes it slower or more ram makes it faster so it is hard to tell you just how long it takes to install your windows !
But a clean install hallways takes less time over a upgrade with the computers i have!!
When you are installing windows it is better to not have anything hooked to your computer other than the key board and mouse like if you have a printer it may stall looking for a driver that is not there then it might just slow down or hang the install !
It would have been better to tell us if you are doing a clean install or a upgrade
and the computer model number and what version of Vista you are installing Basic takes less time
than Ultimate because of the extra software in Ultimate .
Anyway Good Luck to you!!
