Open/Running programs no longer appear in taskbar

Question

I have allowed an exchange student to use by Insp. 8600 to check her email and now I can't see what programs I have running (except to use the alt-tab sequence) I have right clicked on the task bar and have had no luck in finding the correct tool bar that shows current open applications - how can I do this? THANKS!!

Denny,   Thanks to your valuable post and available repair tool, I was able to resolve my 'missing open applications in the XP taskbar'.  Thankfully, it doesn't appear that the problem was caused by a virus (Friendgreet worm) according to McAfee.   While I'm glad that I was able to resolve the issue, my curious nature wants to know what might have caused this problem.  I don't recall altering any settings and it apparently happened 'out of the blue'.   I would appreciate any insight you are willing to share.   Thanks much.   Todd
