Operating System Rebuild Looking for pcouffin.sys

Hi Folks,

I have a Dell Latitude D610 with XP2000. The laptop could not see by backup hard drive, so Dell Tech support told me to remove DVDXCopy Xpress (said this was a conflict with AutoPlay) and rebuild the Operating sys. The rebuild is stalled looking for pcouffin.sys. I cannot reboot from the original OS.

Here are my questions:

1. Where can I find this file?

Could not find using Google (did find a related programs)

2. Did a virus cause this file to dissapear?

I run the paid version of AVG, it was up to date and schedule to scan weekly.

3. Did AVG think was pcouffin.sys malware and deleted it?

I appreciate any and all ideas and suggestions.

Sincerely,

Lynn

You can download the file from here.

pcouffin.sys is not a Windows operating file system.

Pcouffin is part of the Patin Couffin Layer for Dvd/Cd copying developed by VSO software for apps like DvdXCopy, DvdFab, etc

Product name:  Patin couffin engine
Description:  Patin-Couffin low level access layer for CD devices
Company:  VSO Software

It is installed and used by many software packages.

Here are a few:

DVD Fab
DVD XCopy
VSO DIvX to DVD
PSP Video Vault software
ConvertXtoDVD

You mentioned that your removed DVD XCopy.  That is the program that installed that file.

When you say you rebuild the OS, did you just reinstall over the old OS?

What you really need to do is format the hard drive and then perform a clean install of the OS.

Hi Bay Wolf,

Before I make a clean install of the OS, I'd like to see if I can access the files on the Hard Drive.

I did not rebuild the OS. I'm trying to repair the OS so I can recover some important files.

I went to the link you provided and downloaded "driveragent_492.exe."

I can't install this .exe file on the internal hard drive because the system is stuck in the Recovery mode looking for the pcouffin.sys file.

Is there a solution?

For example, if I install the driveragent_492.exe on a different computer, will I be able to see the pcouffin.sys file?

If so, can I copy the pcouffin.sys to a flash drive?

The Recovery software will allow me to browse to a CD or flash drive to find the file.

What do you suggest?

Thank you very much for you time and expertise.

Sincerely,

Lynn
