Operating System (XP) Making my Puter Sick - Can't Boot Up!!!
Hi. I have serious issues that I can't figure out and can't use my computer because of this.
I purchased a Dell Dimension 8100 with Windows ME. I upgraded to XP a few months ago with no problem. My son downloaded a game and my system hasn't been running the same. (alot of crashes, slow, tracking cookies, etc.) so I decided to reinstall the Windows XP upgrade. I did that without incident. I then went to download all the critical updates and everything seemed to be fine...until I rebooted. It gave me an error of "Fatal System Error c000021a.....0xc0000263". The IT people at my work said to do an F8 and pick "Last known good configuration". So like an idiot, I did. I rebooted the pc and dell splash screen came on, then the screen went black. No blinking cursor...nothing! Then I put in the Windows XP upgrade disk and restarted. It said "Press any key to boot from CD". I did. Then it said "This computer is already in the process of being upgraded to Microsoft Windows. What would you like to do?" The 3 options were 1). To continue the current upgrade, press ENTER. 2). To cancel the current upgrade and install a new version of Microsoft Windows, press F10 or 3). To exit setup without installing Microsoft Windows, press F3. I choose ENTER.
It started Windows Setup. Then the Dell splash screen came up and then I got this message error "STOP: 0x0000000a (0x0a0500D, 0x00000002, 0x807c3954). I looked on Microsoft and it said to unplug all my hardware so I did. Then I restarted and tried option 2 above (the F10 one). I got the Windows setup screen (the blue setup screen, with a grey bottom status bar). It said "Setup Loading Files". Then I got "Welcome to Setup" screen which said "This portion of the setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer". It gave me another 3 options. Option 1). To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER. Option 2). To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery console, press R. Option 3). To quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3. I chose ENTER and it gave me the EULA agreement. I accepted the agreement. I got the "STOP: 0x0000000a (0x0a0500D, 0x00000002, 0x807c3954" error again.
I've been down for 3 days and spent about 24 hours of that time trying to get this thing back up and running. Any ideas or suggestions?....or miracles???
Thanks much!

I assume that you have gone through the steps listed here.
Have you set the CD-ROM drive as the first boot device in BIOS? If not, you should do so then go through the standard installation of XP. You should not see any prompts related to a prior installation or giving you the choices you have documented. In the event you need it instructions for the process are here.

Underthegun:
Have you tried a simple reformat?
If you haven't be forewarned that you will lose EVERYTHING on your harddrive and will need both your dell restore disk (if you still have it), or an old windows 98/ME CD to do your first install, and your windows xp upgrade disk.
On the bright side after sitting in front of your computer for 5-6 hours it will run like the day you bought it.
If you haven't all you need to do is hit f8 and choose boot to dos prompt (if it's available).
If it isn't available you will need to create a boot disk (Which can easily be done from another computer if you have one, you should also check to see if its an option with your windows xp upgrade cd).
once in a dos prompt just type: format C:
and hit enter. It will then ask if you are absolutely sure if you want to do this (yes :))
After this is done (1-2 hours depending on disk size/speed) you will either run your dell restore disk or install windows 98/ME.
After the dell restore/windows install is done you will put in the windows xp upgrade disk and run the upgrade just like you did before.
If it asks what type of file system you want I would highly suggest NTFS as in general it is a far more robust system then fat32.
If you have any problems or this doesnt help you feel free to email me at badmagic@godswrathclan.net as I don't check the forums as much as I should.
