OS for Dimension 4100

Question

Hi, I'm a rank beginner getting excited about my first big project: a refurbished Dimension 4100 for my son. Since it is coming without an operating system, I wanted to get some advice about what version of Windows would work best on it; I have a legal copy of '95 for a band-aid (my son's computer crashed and he needs something RIGHT AWAY) but am not sure whether to upgrade to XP or just 98 SE; we had bad experiences with the old computer running too slowly and crashing because it was not designed for the modern operating system that was installed, and I do not want to make the same mistake twice. The new machine has a Pentium III, 1000MHZ and 128 MB of RAM. He will be taking it online when I get it networked to share a dial-up connection.

I'm running Xp on the same system.  However, I would upgrade the ram to 256 at a minimum.  Kip

I ran XP on a 4100 and it ran fine but you need 256Mb of ram with XP. Any less and it is really slow. If you only want to use the 128MB of ram, I suggest W98SE.

Thank you so much; the hardest part about this project is deciding what to do first. I've already got the 98 SE upgrade; just waiting for the computer now. ;)
