If I delete the hotmail account, then it works as normal, so this suggests the problem lies at the Hotmail end.
Again, I'd be grateful if anyone has any idea what the problem is. I wonder if it's got anything to do with Microsoft closing off the access to normal Hotmail accounts (i.e. free accounts) from Outlook Express? However, I can still get it to work manually so maybe not.

This is the error message I get when OE tries to access Hotmail.
Configuration:
Account: Hotmail
Server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
User name: pauljquilty@hotmail.com
Protocol: HTTPMail
Port: 0
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 80004005
