Outlook Express 6 Question

From time to time I receive email from people who have me on their mass mailing lists for various reasons, jokes etc. I have asked them not to do this but it still continues.

When I receive this mail my name or email address does not appear in the TO space. It always contains the name of someone I do not know.

Also I receive email that comes addressed to me by my name and not by my email address.

Question:  Can I configure OE to reject all mail that does not come addressed to me with my email address in the To space and the email address of the person sending it.

Thanks.....................

Bascially, you can block the SENDER, not on your name or e-mail address.  However, if you block a Sender then everything from that sender is blocked.  I don't know if any of the 3rd party spam filters work for what you want, or if they work on blocking the sender too.

BTW, the messages you get with some unknown name in the TO are probably "BCC" (Blind Carbon Copy) addressed messages.  With BCC you can send to multiple addressees but they do not see the other addressees.

fireberd,

Yes, I had a feeling someone would say that.  I know I can block the sender but just want to block certain ways it's sent.

I'm thinking of getting Zone Alarm Pro.  Would this do it.

There are new spam filters discussed by David Pogue in the N.Y. Times that stop Email with false identities such as those you are getting by asking the sender to identify a code word inside a pattern before the Email is accepted.   This stops spoofing cold.  Another way of dealing with this would be to open a new account and move important names, leaving your present account for junk that can be deleted all at once if need be.  Anyone who deals in spoofing does not deserve to be on your Email list anyway.  Within OLXPRS, using block sender may eliminate the spoofers and nothing else.  Try making some rules for Email.  If they don't work, remove them.

BrickYard,

The people sending those emails to Bcc: addressees normally will use the same dummy address in the To: line (not your address, of course). You can set up a message rule which will delete any messages where the To: line contains a specific name. A firewall will not stop their junk mail.

Denny Denham,

Thanks, I didn't know about the firewall deal you mention. I thought you could configure it pretty much any way you wanted.

I am not having to much of a problem with SPAM as I am using a white list black list so to speak on the email addresses that I use often with my ISP.  I am going to keep an eye out to see what name appears in the to line and create a message rule and go from there. I may have to be more direct to the friend and family member that sends this junk.  Very touchy situation.............

paindoc,

You mention a few interesting things.  Part of the problem is that the people that do this are family and close friends.  I can't say any more to them than I already have. I have dial-up and some that send this have DSL and when they send a large junk file my OE goes into overdrive.  Thanks...............

BrickYard,

Try MailWasher (download from here. It is free (donation requested, like Spybot) and it allows you to view your incoming messages on the server and delete them from the server before they are downloaded to your computer.

Brickyard, here is an explanation of how to make an anti spoofing rule.  You can change it to fit your own circumstances.  http://www.computercops.biz/postt8326.html
