outlook express frozen

I have a message in my outlook express that seems to have frozen the whole program. Its status is unopened. When I do anything to it, try to open it, move it , or delete it, I get the "not responding" message at the top of the page. I cant get into any of my folders. When I exit the program, it offers to send an error report to microsoft, I do that, have done it many times now, then it gives me the advice that it perhaps is spyware, malware, etc. Or a problem with a device driver. It suggest I download windows defender, which I have done, but nothing has worked. I have a lot of stuff saved in various folders and I dont want to lose all of that. I am running windows xp and have two user accounts going. Outlook express will work on the other user account.  I have purchased a "registry fix" program, it said it could solve outlook express problems, it didnt.  LOL...any suggestions, PLEASE?

Thanks in advance.

There are little tricks one can try and delete a message in OE. First, are you online when you go into OE? I don't know if you have network connection or not. If you are online maybe the best bet is to boot the computer to the safe mode without networking. Then open OE once in the safe mode and delete the message. But if you say have more than one message in the inbox select a message abouve the one causing trouble. Then hold down the shift key and you the down arrow key to highlight both messages and then select delete. That should get it deleted. I think the freeze is caused by slecting the message you want to delete and then OE tries to open it. If all this fails there are ways to delete the entire inbox using windows explorer. Let me know if you want to go that route and I can tell you how. You can get to the safe mode by tapping the F8 key while booting up. Select safe mode without network.

What version of  IE and OE are you running? Do you change users for the computer to access the other OE account? When you use another account are you sure you are working online? Reason I ask is maybe you can have IE open and not OE. Select work off line under file and get OE to open. You can also copy the inbox from one account, delete the inbox in your account with the bad email, then paste the inbox back from the other account.

Actually I wasn't talking about how to empty the inbox in windows explorer but rather deleting the inbox completely. This isn't hard to do but sort of tricky. First tell me why you think that one email is causing OE to freeze? When you open OE it opens and then the message is selected and that makes it freeze? I would rather first try to help you delete that message. Ok, do this, find another computer and send yourself a couple email so that it will be d/l by OE. Then see if the new email you sent from another computer will allow you access to OE without freezing it up. But to delete the whole inbox you will need to make a new inbox or better yet copy the inbox from another computer with the same version of OE. I am a little concerned as to why this only email is freezing you up.

HI, thank you for trying to help. I followed what you said and the program froze in safe mode as well. It is the only message in the inbox. I would appreciate directions on how to empty that inbox through windows explorer.

Thanks

We have two user accounts. we have OE on both. When I attempt to open OE on my page nothing will happen. There is only one message in there and the it is shown as not even having being opened. If I click on it, or on any of the folders or try to delete the message the cursor automatically goes to the hourglass and I get the "not responding" message at the top of the page. I will try the things you have told me to do and give you an update. Thanks for your help.

Okay....my husband fixed it. He went to the start menu, did a search of outlook express and when it showed all the files, he went into the inbox and deleted the message. Thanks so much for trying to help.

Ok, get a couple new email (at least one) and then when you open OE and find the new email click on it once. Then hold down the shift key and use the up-arrow key to also highlight the old email. Then hit the delete key.
