Outlook express password refusal
This weekend, for some unknown reason, my ISP refuses my password when I attempt to get my e-mail. I've checked the cap lock etc, but it just keeps wanting my name and password (although it is already in the boxes, and I 'renewed' them by entering anew). When I check the details, it says to the effect that the isp mail server will not accept my password. It works fine on Internet Explorer at the same ISP.
I am absolutely positive I am using the correct password and in the lower case as required. I've used it now for over 10 years, and yes, I've paid my bill at the ISP.
Any ideas that might help me?

The same password is used for both mail and Internet. It sounds like somehow the name of your ISP's mail server has become corrupted. Open OE and go to Tools|Accounts, highlight your account and click Properties. See if the incoming and outgoing servers are correctly listed on the Servers tab.

Denny,
I've done that and it all seems correct. If I just click on O.E. on the tool bar, it comes up with the 'connect' window, when I click on connect it dials up and connects. But as it attempts to get the mail, it cones up with a window that has my name and password in it (I've checked and it is the correct info), but it immediately ask the same again. When I look at the details, it has something about server does not recognize my password.
In the accounts, the remember password is checked and I've checked that the proper name and password is in those blocks under accounts.
Any other ideas?
I'm not getting e-mail needless to say, so I'm coming back over here every so often to check if there is a response.
Thanks.

Older versions of Norton AntiVirus used to cause this problem if email screening was selected (this would be NAV 2000 or programs of that vintage). It could be corrected by unselecting that option in NAV, then reselecting it. When this occurred the POP3 server information on the Server tab indicated an address of 127.0.0.1 rather than something like mail.server.com.

Denny,
I haven't had Norton for over a year, using AVG, had it on for almost a year and this hasn't occured.
I keep reconfirming the settings in accounts and they are all as should be.
I'm pretty sure I had this problem about two years ago anf the guy at the local ISP finally cured it for me. But he is no longer there and the current 'tech' is looking up some info since the entries in the accounts window are correct and that the Caps key is in lower case.
All of the search on this board for the password seems to be forgetting the password.
I'll go over to the MSN board and check it as well.
At sometime during the weekend, but not in e-mail, I got and illegal operation, having to do with a kernel 32.DLL.
I shut the comp down and haven't had it since, can't say if this e-mail started immediately there after of not.
Thanks. If you have any other ideas, please advise.

I found the problem.
In the OE / Tools/Accounts, under the mail account, the account 'name field' has somehow gotten bad info. Had the full e-mail address (name@isp) in it. Changed it back to just the account name (that before the @) and it now works OK.
Haven't figured out how it got screwed up. But it cured the problem.
