outlook express security

I have IE outlook express mail.  I have checked the box in security to "not let me open anything that might contain a virus......"  Usually then I am unable to open any attachments...but this is not working.  The box is checked yet I can still open attachments.  I rebooted the computer and tried it again but still attachments can be opened.  Any thoughts on what to do next?  I have  Mcafee antivirus, spybot, and adaware.  I have XP.

First, you cannot depend on this feature to keep your computer virus or trojan free, so you're smart to keep your A/V program up to date.

Usually, OE will block only certain attachments based soley on their file extension (exe, com, url, etc.). As you can see, this is hardly a fool-proof procedure. But if your A/V is scsanning mail, which it should be doing, you should not worry.

Here is a list of blocked extensions (considered unsafe) for Outlook and I imagine it's the same list for OE:
