Are you sure the new RAM is compatible with this system? Dell PCs can be very fussy about RAM. Is the 1 GB of RAM made up of 2 identical 512 MB modules?

Paging errors are frequently associated with the hard drive. Reboot and press F12 before XP starts to load. Go to Utilities partition and run extended hard drive tests. If errors reported, back up personal files to external media asap. ;)

If no errors, reboot and at desktop:

start>run

type in: chkdsk c: /f

press OK

Accept the offer to run chkdsk at next boot and then reboot. chkdsk will run before XP loads again and attempt to any fix file system errors on the hard drive.

When that's done and you're back at the desktop, defrag the hard drive

How much free space is available on this hard drive? If it's pretty full, run the Windows Disk Cleanup utility. And if possible, also copy some files (eg, music, vids etc) onto CD or external drive and delete them from the hard drive to free up space.
