I feel your pain. My E510 just did the same thing. I ran the chkdsk/r and it told me there were too many unrecoverable problems. I had to restore to factory setting. I was told though that the code I had meant that the hard drive was failing. I'm in the process of installing a new hard drive right now.
I'll have to hook up the old hard drive and run a test on it to see if it is actually dying.
Also, there is a link that gives instructions on getting the OS disks. I had to call Dell and have them send them to me.
Thanks everyone for your help. I went ahead and just did the restore because I can't get my hands on XP Pro disks right away.
Bev, thanks so much for the link to request the disks. I will be taking care of that right away because I'm sure I will need them again.
I just have one more question. Why does Dell
not include the disks when they ship their computers? It would seem logical (and simple) to take care of that minor issue from the get-go....no?
You should be able to obtain the disks required for a reinstallation of windows, from
Here.

It's due to Dell's infamous, Media Reduction Initiative. Then several months ago, Dell reverse their policies and again shipped the reinstallation disks with the computers.
The factory installed Dell PC System Restore has an achilles' heel, when the hard drive fails, you have lost the feature.
