First step, uninstall the drive in the Device Manager, restart Vista and it will be detected and reinstalled (refreshed).  This procedure seems to fix a lot of flakey problems and MAY fix yours.
 
If this doesn't help, suggest you repost in the Notebooks CD/DVD section for more assistance.
 
Edit/Added:  To access the Device manager, hold the Windows key down and press the Pause/Break Key.  When the panel comes up, click on Device Manager in the upper left of the panel.

Thank you for the tips. The reinstall did not work. I wll try the repost.
