Physical Memory Dump - PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

I'm new at this, please forgive my format:

I've been receiving what I believe to be a, "Blue Screen Of Death", and have been attempting to correct the error myself without success.

The screen itself states info, "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA", then lists the infomation about about new hardware/software properly installed and such.  The technical information has been

***STOP: 0X00000050 (0XA5EE25CC, 0X00000000, 0X8054A569, 0X00000000)

The technical info above will remain the same in previous messages EXCEPT the first segment of characters within the paraentheses: 0XA61375CC  OR  0XA5D425D4    OR  0XA610D5AC...)

--------------------------------------------------------

Overall preformance :  very sluggish.  It will run okay for about 15 minutes.  It will not allow me to connect to the internet, yet it will allow outlook express to connect to both the incoming and outgoing servers in the email client.

If I click the START button:
before 15 min elapses, it works okay
after 15 min elapses, it hangs up, and MIGHT after a full 5 minutes, allow me access to the restart/shutdown option.

-------------------------------------------------------

I've reported the error, and was directed to a device driver error.  I've checked the device manager, which shows everything is working fine.  I've removed my scanner as it is the most recent hardware and software I've installed, although it's been working fine since I installed it in december, and this problem has been more recent.  I've restored my pc using both the utility on the pc as well as from my external harddrive numerous times without success.  I've even reinstalled and updated my nortont security numerous times without success.

-------------------------------------------------------

System Specs:

Dimension XPS Gen 5 Pentium D Processor 830 w/dual core tech (3GHz, 800FSB)
Windows XPMedia Center
2GB Due Channel DDR2 SDRAM @ 533MHz - 4DIMMs
video - 256 MB PCI Express x16(DVI/VGA/TV- out) ATI Radeon X850 XTPE
500 GB Serial ATA II Harddrive (7200 RPM)
100 GB USB External Harddrive (7200 RPM)

-------------------------------------------------------

I'm uncertain what other info to include, so I will stop here.   I am at work as I previously mentioned I'm unable to connect to the internet from my residence.  Ironically this pc locked up earlier, producing more than one post. - I've attempted to correct that by erasing it, and posting it as an 'error' as I was unable to delete it.

Please advise.  I'm at my wits end.

What are the settings you are using for power saving.  (after 15 minutes, is the pc going into standby or are you just splashing a screen saver)?

Have you installed additional memory or is the memory installed all Dell factory installed memory?

How big is the hard drive and how much free space do you have?

Hello.

Setting/Screen Saving: Screen Saver (blank) set to 10 min. Power Saving: turn off monitor after 20 min, turn off harddisks after 1 hour, System standby set to never, System hibernates set to never.

No additional memory installed.  Only additional hardware added since purchase is a Adesso USB drawing tablet and a HP ScanJet 4890 Scanner, both several months before the error started appearing.

Internal harddrive is 500 GB, 30.6 GB used, 435 GB unused  and an external harddrive of 100 GB, 61.6 GB used and 32.2 GB used.

Thanks for your time.

Troubleshooting the USB devices would be your next step.

Do you have the most current drivers for your USB devices?

Have you tried to recreate the problem with the USB devices unplugged?

When is the last time you ran a chkdsk or defrag?

Hi.

I'm uncertain what exact steps I should take to troubleshoot the USB devices?  Can I presume you mean under the "hardware wizard" under the System Properties/Hardware?  I have not tried this, but will, if this is what you meant?  I've never had any luck with any troubleshooter I've attempted in the past, so I would not have thought to do it.

Regarding drivers, I can only presume I had the most current ones.  Each time I've added software or hardware of any kind to a pc, I check for updates online.  Currently I am unable to check for any updates as I can not connect to the internet from that pc.

I have had the USB devices unplugged and uninstalled for the past week in an attempt to eliminate them.  The only devices I have remaining are the external harddrive (which I previously disconnected and uninstalled/installed numerous times) and the wireless keyboard and mouse, which I need to operate the pc.  I still get the error.

Chkdsk and Defrag... good question.  Defrag not that long ago, chkdsk, couldn't remember.  I will attempt those next and let you know.   Thanks sincerely,

Jen

Hi.

Troubleshooter found devices to be working properly.  Defragment found nothing.

Chkdsk - I am unfamiliar with the parameters, so I was only able to run the command in read-only:

------------------------------------------------

C prompt (ran in safe mode w/command prompt)

The type of file system is NTFS

Running chkdsk in read only mode

Chkdsk ran thru file verification, index verification and security descriptors successfully.  It said "recovering lost files" after index verification.

Chkdsk discovered free space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run chkdsk with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

488327804 KB total disk space
  28928204 KB in 115044 files.
        35240 KB in 6444 indexes.
                0 KB in bad sectors.
242160 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
458222200 KB available on disk
4096 bytes in each allocation unit
122081951 total allocation units on disk
114555500 allocation units available on disk.

I attempted to run the command with /F and the pc simply checked my F drive upon reboot.

I see you did some of the things.  The big question is were you able to replicate the problem again.

The files that you spoke of being recovered are generally files that are located in the Windows\Prefetch directory.  This could be a good thing as these are several start up executables that can effect drivers and services.

You have to try to reporduce the issue.  Only then are you going to be able to figure out with some predictability what your root cause is.

I haven't been home long enough for the pc to be on longer than a few moments to find out.  The problem only arises if I am using the pc for some time.  (due to me working full time and attending classes half time).   I can get a better understanding over the weekend, I hope, and will tell you if the error rears it's ugly head again.

How do I use the chkdsk command to fix what problems it found?  Yes, the pc is still slow.

This morning I turned the pc on and let it sit.  After about a half hour I came back and there was an error message only (no BSOD) It was from Windows Explorer

Error Signature:

AppName: explorer.exe

AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180

ModName: netshell.dll

ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180

Offset: 0005db9a

It specified where the .txt file was located, and upon searching, I attempted to post what was included:  (I am unable to connect to the internet, so I am unable to send it.) However, it states "invalid HTML" and removed the entire error message.

---------------------------------

If I attempt to debug, the pc simply shuts down numerous necessary programs, like Norton and others…

That file is accocitated with Norton.  Uninstall all of your Norton software.  Dont do any reinstalls of any Norton application.  Just unistall all Norton applications and try to replicate the problems.

Did you ever run chkdsk /f and fix the problems.

from a dos window type

chkdsk /f

It will tell you it cant run because the volume is in use.  type

y

to have it run on next reboot

when the pc gets past the bios screen hit F8 key for windows startup choices.  Select safe mode.  The check disk will run in front of the same mode boot.  Once you have arrived in safemode, reboot the machine again.

ok.  didn't make sence as I gave you specific feedback on the chkdsk to which you didn't reply previously.  I wasn't getting anywhere and I couldn't wait around waiting for another error to appear.  Reformat with updates/drivers seems to be working appropriately.
