whenever you save a picture from a site that is a *bitmap* (or as the problem i'm having defaulting as *bitmap*) the drop-down menu doesn't give the option to save as anything but bitmap...

right click on the picture you want, and select "save picture as"

When you save the file you can use the "save as file type" drop down box and select another format before saving, you can also rename the file to anything you want. Websites do not take the time or effort to name picture files correctly.

Delete all your Temporary Internet Files in Internet Options in Internet Explorer and try again.

Well then that is the only file format they offer, you can convert it using other software. Are you using the Save picture as method?

Post a link to one of those  bitmap pictures if you can.

i can right click on any pic on this page... and it saves as... bmp
I've been batch converting in psp... don't want to do that when there is obviously something wrong in my system...

i thought the same thing (Temporary Internet Files ).
i have ZoneAlarm Pro and have it set to delete T.I.F.'s, cookies,history, etc. every day.
i even manually went in to ZA and cleaned up.
also went in to Internet Options in Internet Explorer and deleted from there just in case ZA wasn't doing it's job, but it still does it.
anything else i can try?
Thanks

I wonder if you have aol. I used to be and had a similar issue, and it turned out they had a setting that made all downloaded pictures bitmap. I had to search through their settings (it wasn't obvious) until I found the right one and unticked the box. So, your isp may have a similar setting hidden away somewhere - something like "compress graphics when downloaded". HTH

no aol...

i've been surfing since 1997 with several different pc's, (with internet explorer 4,5,6,7), same server, never had this problem before 2 weeks ago...
my current pc i've been using since 2004, prior to 2 weeks ago, i was able to save pictures as its intended .JPG extention... or .gif extention.
i am not anywhere near an expert on a pc, but pretty much know all the basics and then some...

i download lots of pictures for screensavers and wallpaper, and family pictures.
it's just an inconvence to allow it to 'save as...' .bmp file.
you have to rename every *untitled* picture,
got to covert.
got to delete .bmp after converting...
not to mention that .bmp file is 20 times the size of a .jpg file.
some being as high as 10mb or more for one picture!!!
good thing i have paint shop pro as you can batch convert a large number of pictures...
i can't save animated .gif... animation is lost in .bmp

something has changed in my pc.
there is nothing, that i'm aware of, that i did to change my pc's setting.
didn't install anything. the power didn't go out with pc on.

i'm thinking it has something to do with the registry, but i don't know much about the registry.
but i have Registry Mechanic and it doesn't find anything wrong that will correct the problem.
i use ZoneAlarm Pro and AdAware to scans for spyware.
ZAP for firewall
Norton's for anti-virus

any ideas

Hey walbek;

I assume you are using IE7? Have you tried Firefox to see if you have the same problem? If they work in one and not the other then we have narrowed the problem down somewhat. You may also want to check if the extension to these types of files exist. You can do this by going to Control Panel-> Folder Options, and look on the File Types tab for the extension. You can also do this from any folder by Tools-> Folder Options. Just scroll through the list and see if these extensions are listed.

Hey Tom,

 ok, now we're getting somewhere...
   don't know why i didn't think of it but i checked out your suggestion on Foxfire and it worked in that browser... .gif and .jpg extensions are saved correctly...
also checked "File Types" and .jpg, .jpeg .jif, and all photo ext. do exist.
so we've narrowed it down to ie7... one note ie7 doesn't give the option to repair as previous versions did. i guess i can remove and reinstall.
what do you suggest?

thank you

Hello Richie;

Removing and reinstalling IE7 is probably the easiest alternative for now. If the reinstall works then the problem solved.

Hope it works out!

Hey tom,

I un-installed IE7, I checked to see if the same problem existed in IE6, and it did...it also saved as .bmp...
I re-installed IE7 and still have the same problem...

Hey Richie;

 I have gone over every possible thing I can in IE7 and cannot for the life of me figure out why you are having this problem.  It is quite baffling. :smileymad:  The only thing I have left to suggest is that you go through each of IE7's settings one at a time.  That is, check each setting under Internet Options.  Do one at a time and enable or disable the setting and check to see if it resolves the problem.  If it doesn't then reset the setting back to it's original position.  One other thing that comes to mind is to check the Microsoft Knowledge Base to see if this has been documented.  I have heard of other "weird" things like this with IE7 so you might get lucky over there.

 Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

Maybe it's not my PC?
I've noticed yesterday that my 2 nephews on separate PC's are having the same problem as me... they are saving as... bmp...
is anybody else having this problem...
is *IE"7"* causing this problem?
