Please help! STOP: 0x00000024 Message

Guys i've got a problem with my desktop pc. For about a week or so i've been updating drivers (haven't done many updates since i bought my pc about five years ago, and thought my pc needed them). Then the last few days i had the blue screen appear on booting my pc, it would do its stuff and then appeared to boot ok and i could use it. However i've just booted it and i get a black screen saying 'we apologise for any inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully...'. Then it gives me five different options, including Safe Mode. I've tried all five and it keeps going back to the same screen. This has obviously got something to do with the driver updates i was doing, i just wished i had gone back to a restore point when i got the first blue screen a few days ago.

 I started in 'Safe Mode' and then pressed F8 on booting and then 'disable automatic restart on system failure', and got a different blue screen. This time it says' 'A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer...', the technical information at the bottom says 'STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x83398828, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000).

 


I searched on the Dell website and it says to press F12, i've done this and got the Boot Device Menu and following options:
1 - Normal
2 - Primary Master Drive
3 - Hard Disk Drive C:
4 - IDE CD-ROM Device
5 - System Setup
6 - IDE Drive Diagnostics
7 - Boot to Utility Partition

Anybody know what i should do next? Any help would be much appreciated. Some forums have been saying to reboot with my windows xp cd, but i wasn't given a cd when i bought my pc from Dell, it was pre-installed.

How do i do some of the colour tests? Some of these things are almost like an iq test! I'm on the RGB Colour Combination test now and not sure what to do.

Choose 7 and run an extended test on the memory and hard drive. Note:  run EXTENDED tests - NOT just quick ones.

If the drive and RAM pass, then go into Safe Mode and remove the last driver you installed.  Then reboot and see if you can get the system started normally.

I've finished the diagnostics test and most of the fails say:

Test Results : Fail

Error Code 0F00:021B

Msg: Block 442022: Flaw in medium or an error in the recorded data. If this is a removable media, try different media

Test Results : Fail

Error Code 0F00:021D

Msg: Block 442023: Illegal request - possible use of incorrect media

Any help is gratefully received.

Getting worried guys, as on another forum somebody told me to ask Dell for a new Hard Disk Drive! I'm assuming this would mean i would lose all my photo's etc? Is he right, is there nothing i can do to get my pc back to it's state of about a week ago?

Don’t think you mentioned the desktop computer model, anyhow

 

Looks like your HDD may be toast?

 

You may still be able to recover personal data, depends on extent of damage

If personal data recovery is really important you should consider buying an external USB connected HDD enclosure, like one of these click here

 

After that, there’s not much more you can do without a valid licensed Windows CD/DVD, options are:

 

1.If the registered owner of computer – then Contact Dell

 

If in the US request backup discs, click here otherwise contact your local region Dell Support

E.g. if in UK click here to correspond by e-mail with Tech Support &/or Customer Services

 

2. Borrow a Dell OEM XP CD/DVD – needs be same as preinstalled XP OS (see COA sticker)

 

I.e. if XP Pro was preinstalled OS you need a Dell OEM XP Pro CD/DVD (preferably a SP2 version)

 

3. Buy a Full Retail (boxed) XP CD/DVD licensed version

 

Once you obtain correct XP CD/DVD you can boot from CD-ROM & see if HDD is repairable using Recovery Console or doing an XP Repair Install

If not then you may want to try an XP Clean Install (but would lose all data)

 

If above doesn’t work then you will need to buy a new HDD & do an XP Clean Install

Those errors refer to the CD/DVD, not the hard drive.  If the hard drive has passed the diagnostics (sounds like it has), make a backup of your data (use Safe Mode - F8 - if it'll start in safe mode, or purchase  a 2.5" EIDE USB 2.0 notebook drive enclosure, mount the drive in it, and attach to a working system to make a backup), and then reload everything (CTRL-F11 once at the Dell screen will do this automatically - do all Windows critical updates thereafter).

Thanks for your help fellas. It’s a Dell Dimension 3000. I’ve tried contacting Dell, but they ask for my debit card details as soon as they answer! Shouldn’t Dell send me an XP free of charge seeing as I didn’t get one when I bought my pc?

I've downloaded Hitachi's DFT and done an advanced test, my pc had a 0x00 success code. This apparently means that it's not the disk drive that has the problem, so where do i go from here?

ejn63 may reply with further suggestions, meanwhile:

 

If you reckon the HDD is OK it doesn’t change much other than software recovery is more likely

Academic if you don’t have an XP CD – you may want to read this thread, click here

 

If not already done, open up the tower & check that all cable connections are secure between drive devices & mobo

It’s not clear if you can still boot to Safe mode without errors or if you tried “Last Known Good Configuration”?

 

If not, then as previously suggested, as a precaution, decide if you want to save personal data

Some of the options are:

Remove existing HDD & insert in an external USB HDD enclosure, or

Connect as a “slave” drive in a working computer, or

Buy new HDD, do an XP Clean Install & then connect existing HDD as a “slave” drive in D3000 (probably also need HDD bracket & connector IDE cable(s))

 

The STOP: 0x00000024 error is normally associated with corrupt/missing NTFS system files

If that’s the cause (?), then run the command chkdsk /r from Windows Setup Recovery Console, if repairable it will fix NTFS system files, otherwise it will report HDD cannot be repaired 

 

I’d be surprised if the Repair Install appears as an option if it’s a corrupt/missing NTFS.SYS?

 

Using either above method should NOT delete personal data/settings, but if you do anything wrong in Windows Setup you could end up losing data

 

If not a hardware problem then an XP Clean Install will fix the problem but you would definitely lose data

 

If you don’t have XP CD then as suggested by ejn63

Use Dell PC Restore (DSR) utility if installed & it still works, again you would wipe/lose data

Dell only started installing DSR mid/late summer 2004, so your 5-year-old D3000 may not have the DSR utility?

Wow! Thanks for all the help! I've tried chkdsk /r from Windows Setup Recovery Console, and get the following response: 'The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems'. Unfortunately i can't boot in Safe Mode.

I rang Dell earlier today and they are sending me a free XP home edition (SP2) disk! So as soon as it arrives i will try and repair my pc, i am so lost without it!

Some great news then – keep it in a safe place  :emotion-21::emotion-1:

 

Just out of interest, was it Tech Support or Customer Services??

 

When you receive the CD try running chkdsk again with the /r switch, it should confirm if HDD has too many damaged sectors or not?

It was customer support in the U.K., i got the number from www.saynoto0870.com. Thanks for your help, i'll keep you updated when the software arrives.
