http://www.javatester.org/ You can test your version of JAVA at this site. I have version 1.4.2.05 and it works with XP. You might want to uninstall and try reinstalling.
Microsoft VM does no harm residing on your system (both VMs coexist nicely as long as only one is in use). As long as Microsoft VM is working properly there is no urgency in updating the Java Runtime Environment from Sun but keep the download site handy in Favorites for the day in the future when some new implementation of Java is not handled properly by the Microsoft product.
If you elect to remove the Microsoft VM create a Restore Point prior to starting just in case a problem arises with editing the registry. This will allow you to gracefully restore your system.

I got it fixed with the help of a helpdesk. But I now am running MS Virtual Machine.
I still have the Sun _03 on my machine but am not using it now. Do you think I should uninstall _03 and MS VM and download _05? The uninstall of MS VM seems pretty complicated with the needed removal of some registry keys per the website you sent me. Being a novice in that area I'm a bit concerned
