"Please select operating system"

I have a Dim 8400 that came with XP Home. I upgraded to XP Pro, and subsequently needed to reinstall OS due to a problem when switching between user accounts (Dell recommendation). No big deal.

However, when I put the XP Pro disk in, formatted and installed, it never asked for the original disk (I think it should have because this was the up/g disk).

Anyhow, when I power up, I get a screen that counts down from 30, asking me to select an OS from two choices, both of which say XP Pro. It's like I'm in a dual boot environment.

The first one works, but the 2nd one doesn't. It referred to something not being present. I feel like this is related to the native XP Home.

Anyway, why am I getting this screen requiring me to select an OS? How can I get rid of it?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You should be able to fix this with msconfig.  Click Start | Run then type in msconfig and press Enter.  Go to the boot.ini tab and click 'Check All Boot Paths'.

You can also edit boot.ini, once you have identified which is the redundant entry; control panel system applet, advanced tab, click settings in the startup and recovery section, click edit. It opemns in Notepad, make the change you need, save.
