On a new Dell computer, have Microsoft Office Power Point Viewer 2003
Cannot open pps files I get in email.  My older dell opens them, however.

Thank you...but...first, I have sbcyahoo mail. Tried saving to computer button and saved then clicked on the file and it still would not open.   If have to change the registry, don't think "I" had better do that without tech support guidance. Tried to call Dell Support (have software coverage) but after two hours on the phone on hold waiting for a tech...gave up for tonight.  Thanks for always being there Denny for people like me!

mullenette,

You can open the files if you save them to hard drive first. To fix the viewer so that you can view them in place see the proceures here.

mullenette,

I'd be willing to place a fairly substantial bet that software support proposes to charge you $99 for assistance with a registry edit. Let me know if I have guessed right in that regard.

This is on another family member's computer and last night they bought "software" coverage about $250 for a year for all computers and only for 4 events (I would have tried other methods first...but..)  otherwise yep, it would've been $99 exactly per incident.  He hasn't contacted them as yet today to pursue this but will let you know.  I told him I could probably get the probable answer on this forum faster than he could get it on the phone and that's true, you came through.  Will let you know what transpires.

Would it work for him to just re-download the 2003 viewer from microsoft? His programs show he has it, but can't open pps files.   Cannot find it on the disks that came with the computer.

Software coverage will more than likely only cover what was originally installed on the system, so Power Point Viewer won't be covered, as Dell doesn't install it.

See above, and reinstalling it might work.  You may get some help from Microsoft, being as how they are the developers of those Viewer add-ons, but it's probably going to take some finesse as far as where/how you submit the request for assistance to them.  http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx would be the place to start.

mullenette,

Oddly, my post in this thread from this morning has disappeared.

After I made the change to the registry I am able to open PowerPoint presentations from within Outlook Express but when I do I am prompted by a security popup to either run the presentation or cancel it. When I choose to run it, I then have to select PowerPoint Viewer from the list of applications to use to open it (despite the fact that I have already set that application for use with *.ppt/*.pps presentations. When I double-click the file from within Windows Explorer it opens directly.

In my earlier post I recommended trying to download the reader again (from here.

Thank you to all on this.  Surprise!... followed your link Denny and the 2003 download worked just fine, even though that computer showed we already had it.  Downloaded anyhow and it now works!  Thanks again.

Download Open Office, a free office group of programs that run on Java offered by Sun Microsystems.  The presentation function in this program will open your Power Point files without a problem.  Find and download it from here.  http://www.openoffice.org/ .  It runs a complete office suite that is fully compatible with Microsoft Office.  Since I don't own Power Point or Excel, I use Open Office.
