Powerdown button in Start menu to immediately "sleep"

I would like to configure the powerdown button in the Start menu to automatically make my Inspiron go to Sleep, instead of bring up a window that gives me Sleep as the default selection. I have found that it comes out of Sleep mode so quickly and flawlessly that I am fine with just using this function, and only rebooting when I need to for a program, etc. I could have sworn that I've seen ways to get this to happen a few years ago, but I never paid attention because I always liked the choices. Now, of course, the only articles/tweaks I seem to bring up with Google are the ones that tell you how to make Shutdown the default selection--but what I want to do is to click on the red shutdown button and have it imediately go into Sleep mode. BTW--I have Vista Home basic, and the classic 98-style start menu.

Click the start menu and in the search box type power options and press enter.
On each of the plan settings there is a selection for " Change plan settings. " Select that option for the plan you are using.

Then select " Change advanced settings " in the resulting window there are lots of options that you can change.

One is Power buttons and lid, one of the submenus under that heading is " Start Menu Power Button " Here is where you set the default action.

I did that, but I still get a popup window asking me if I want to sleep, shutdown, etc.--making the change you recommended simply renders teh default selection to Sleep, instead of Shutdown. What I would like to do, is have the computer actually go to Sleep mode when I click on the powerdown button in the Start menu, instead of giving me a popup window asking me what I want the computer to do. Like I said at the end of my first post--I am running this in Classic, 98-style mode of the start menu. Other folks I am reading sound like they are getting their computers to go into Sleep mode immediately after clicking on the powerdown button in teh start menu, without having to click on a new window that asks if I want to shut down, sleep, or whatever.

That is strange, sorry I cannot help you anymore than that. When I installed Vista Sleep was the default when the power button on the start menu was clicked. I changed it to Hibernate and it works just fine with no pop up window....
