Precision 360 - SPOOLSV.EXE - CPU 99%

This is a strange animal. It's a brand new DELL Precision 360 computer running XP. The system is fine as soon as I power it on. However, anytime I try to print (and apparently start Outlook) the system slows down to a crawl as the CPU caps and hangs at 100%. I've identified the service as SPOOLSV.EXE, a windows service used for printing and so forth. When left to start automatically (... default) the service is never released. The end result was that the system was so slow that I had to actually disable the service from starting altogether to use the computer.

I have nothing other than the generic on the network settings, disabled IM in Outlook, and I'm now all update Windows updates.

Please help and thanks.

As a starting point I would delete the printer and reinstall it.  Get the latest drivers from the printer suppliers web site.

What anti-vrius are you using?  From looking around on Google, NAV sometimes causes this problem with servers.  Although this doesn't seem to apply to your case you might try disabling it temporarily (assuming you have Norton Anti-Virus) and seeing if that has any effect.

I've removed the entire printer from the mix. Still nothing.

Unfortunately scanning for viruses, scanning for ad/malware and disabling NAV didn’t seem to help anything. Can anyone think of anything else?

Thanks so much for your time.

P.S. – Spoolsv.exe is only located in the C:\windows\system32 directory.
