that's great, many thanks for the advice, much appreciated, I'll give that a go. I had assumed it was a software problem, hadn't thought of the hardware possibility.
Open the case and uplug and replug both of the power and data cables on the hard drive. Sounds like a cable is loosing contact with the hard drive.

contact tech support and have them replace the harddrive if you have the contract running.this thing will will get worse.seems like your hard drive is dying

Thanks for the advice. My PC is less than a year old. Is it likely the hard drive is dying or is it more likely to be a loose connection?

you may be right about the loose connection a dying harddrive is certainly not out of question.

2. Run Diagnostics to possibly rule out HD failure.
(If you call for Dell support, they may ask you to run diagnostics anyway)
