primary hard drive disk 0

Hi,
I just started at this company and tried to turn on the laptop (inspiron 4100) and I get an error saying primary hard drive disk 0 not found, no bootable devices, strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for set up utility.  f1 produces the same response... f2 shows I have no hard drive.
I have tried removing the hard drive and reinserting it. I have tried using the operating system reinstallation cd, I have tried run the diagnostics etc. Many hours later and still the same results. The other person in my office said the prior employee dowloaded service pack 2 and it never worked after that... I have no idea if that has anything to do with it or not.... but HELP!!!  I am at the end of my limited knowledge on how to fix this!!

If the hard drive is physically there and you cannot run diagnostics or reinstall the OS, I would assume the drive is dead, which has NOTHING to do with an attempted install of SP2.

I have the exactly same problem with inspiron 4100...i think it's b'cos of the adapter.....there is recall for this adapter b'cos of overheating...so harddisk failed due to this over heating......we can fight with Dell to fix harddisk for free...
