Problem after reinstalling: missing ethernet controller

Hi,

This is my first post and I'm really hoping you can help me out. I've just had to reformat and reinstall and it seems I'm missing some drivers. I'm missing the ethernet controller and the VGA video controller. Any ideas on how I can fix this? I'm using a Dell Dimension 9150 with XP Media Centre but I've no idea which drivers I should be using.

Thanks!

No need to post that much info. When installing XP, you must install the chipset drivers and Desktop System Software (listed under System Utilites) first--before all other drivers. Those and all drivers are available on your Dell download page here. Then you will be able to install the rest of the necessary drivers. Your specific hardware will be listed in Device Manager.

The drivers for the Dimension 9150 are, in the order they should be installed:

  • Dell Desktop System Software (required)
  • Intel® chipset drivers for ICH7 systems
  • PCI Express® x16 video controller driver
  • SigmaTel® STA9220 driver
  • Intel 82562GZ 10/100 Ethernet controller driver
  • Intel 82573L Gigabit Ethernet controller
  • Drivers for any PCI or PCI Express cards installed

If you have added any hardware (cards, printers, etc) you'll also need to load the drivers for them as well.

Thanks Mary and Larry but - and I know I'm a beginner - but where exactly do I find those drivers?  I don't see them listed anywhere?

Thanks

Dimension 9150 Drivers.  <- Click this link.

You will need to do additional research before you begin installing.  There are 18 files under video and you should need only one of them.  Larry identified two types of network interface adapters, and only one of them will be in your particular computer.  The last item in Larry's list is a generic entry for a PCI add-on adapter card, which you may or may not have.  The driver for this card will not be on the Drivers list most likely since you would have purchased it locally along with its own drivers disk.

Edit:  Nearly forgot; the Desktop System Software is in the System Utilities menu.

Thanks all!  It's fixed now...I finally figured out how to access the drivers so carefully hidden on the Dell CD-Rom! :)

Hi  I have a similar problem.  Grateful to find Larry's advice re. drivers but on the resource cd the names are different.

E.g Network drivers

Broadcom 4401 Integrated NIC rev. a03

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller rev. a1

Broadcom 570x Gigabit intergrated controller re. A0

Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet Rev:A00

Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection Rev. A00

None of which are mentioned in Larry's post.  Which should I choose for 9150?  I assume that this is why I cant connect to the internet to configure my router.

Also I tried to install the Desktop system software but it says setup cannot run?

I've never used a Resource CD for the 9150, but the one I received with my D 2400 will autorun when placed into the CD drive.  After you allow it to install the application and select the computer model you have, it gives you a list of what it believes to be the best match for your particular computer.  Just look for the drivers that have checkmarks by them.

Another way you can get a hint is to go here, enter your service tag, and select the "Original System Configuration" tab.  The entries can be a bit cryptic, but you can often get the part number for the network adapter this way.  You can also click the "Current System Configuration" tab, allow the Dell site to download a tool that inspects your computer, and see what you have in that way.

I have noted on the Dell support page for the 9150 that the Intel Pro 1000 is the only driver listed.  You might also try that if you haven't already.

The resource cd does run but I cant see the "My system" feature and the drop down menus are only for Dimension models 2400, 3000, XPS Gen 4, 8400, 5000 - I've got a 9150 and dont know which one of the options, if any, would be close to my system.

I'll try the intel pro though.  Thanks
