PROBLEM BOOTING UP WINDOWS NORMALLY IN WINDOWS XP

Hi guys, i wonder if anyone can help?

i have a dimension 4550 running XP Home, i had to have a new cd/dvd reader/writer installed, it all went fine, but since windows wont boot up properly?

it starts with the dimension screen (normal) then windows usually kicks in,
but now it wont, i get:

dimension screen, then it sits, i get a choice of F2/F12 in the top right hand corner of the screen,
i hit F12 and i get a list of set ups, i hit return on normal, then i have to hit F1 and then windows kicks in with its start up screen and its fine.

machine is running fine! nothing strange, i reformatted a couple of days ago thinking this may fix this problem, but no joy! someone said i need to change something in the bios?
but i dont know what?

i know my way around, but im no pro :) so if anyone can tell me what they think it could be? or what i need to do? in laymens terms, it would be greatly appreciated.

thank you in advance

Hey, none of us are pros, but if you installed the drive, you're not doing to badly. :)

I assume you're referring to a single drive, right? Did you jumper the drive CS (cable select), connect to the end connector, etc.?

First thing I would try is the old Force IDE device redetect: boot to system setup, turn on caps lock, scroll lock, & number lock. Press ALT+E then ALT+F, save settings & exit.

Hey Osprey :)

Thanks ;) i can just about get by reformatting, yep only one drive, and as far as i know yep he did jumper the drive, thing is the guy who installed the drive for me, he builds pcs for a living, has done for years, and this has even got him completely stumped?? Dell machines catch him out as the builds differ from other machines he works on.

thank you, i'll follow your advice and see if it works ;) thank you heaps for your help ;)

Please don't assume the guy set the jumper to cable select. Open up the box and check it yourself.

Few of these computer shops are familiar with this setup, but it works well for the vast majority of Dells.

Hi Osprey, the drive was connected properly, so i tried the alt sequence you gave me and it worked like a charm!! thank you so much ;))

it carried on booting as normal after i did it, so i restarted my machine, and waited ;) it showed me the Dell screen for a brief flash, then voila!! windows loaded perfectly and i didnt have to do a thing ;)

thank you so much for your time and your advice, i've been trying for months to sort this out, and no one seem to know the problem, now i dont have to worry thanks to you!

your a star, thank you heaps ;)

take care
