Problem configuring McAfee Virus Scan

Every time I turn on my computer McAfee requests to be set up.  When I submit my info I get a message saying that this DellPC has already been registered and that I can log in if I need access.  I can not log in with the info I submitted and do not get an email when I request my password.  I can not get updates because I do not know what login this computer was set up.  The machine is refurbished and I believe that McAfee was set up by someone other than me, and now I can not access.  Please help.

Thank you.

Hi e --

Just went thru the same problem for the past several days since receiving a D-8400 from the outlet site with McAfee preinstalled.  Seems that someone else had registered the software, it is keyed to the machine.  Dell support told me that McAfee would have to clear something from their database, so off I went to McAfee.  I've spent several days trying to get an answer out of McAfee via Live Chat, email support, telephone support -- in short, extremely poor service IMHO.

Ultimately I was told to uninstall the software, reboot the 'puter and download and reinstall the programs from the website.   McAfee support didn't seem to understand or think that there was any setting that they should clear to let me register the installed product.   I have another McAfee subscription on a laptop, and the McAfee support person told me to just use the already existing account  and then go to customer support to change the email address if I wanted.   McAfee did say that this was a "know issue" and gave me a toll free number which is no where on their website that I could find to call - 1-866-622-3911.  I share this freely as I made several calls on my dime to be told to go to web pages that didn't answer the problem, that I'd reached the wrong department, couldn't be forwarded so call back to another number (at my cost) that was not correct either, etc.  As I said, extremely poor service.

I've not had time to uninstall and try this solution, so I don't know if it is the answer.  I'm pretty disgusted with McAfee for all the runaround I've been given the past several days and may just uninstall and go with someone else as well as well as cancel the laptop's subscription.  I run V-com's (www.v-com.com) System Suite on several other boxes and am quite happy -- comes with TrendMicro AV, Sygate Firewall, Disk and System utilities, plus more bonuses.  If this reinstall doesn't work, I'll definitely ditch McAfee once and for all.

I also suggested to Dell that when they get a box back and put it in the Outlet inventory, they cancel any and all software registrations that may have been affected.  Or uninstall and reinstall the software so purchasers get a clean machine.  You might want to add your voice to that.  And do a spyware, adware, virus sweep of your "new" Dell if it came from the Outlet.
