Hi,
Your are not the only one!

I got a 3 month old XPS410, E6300 @ 1.85 ghz, 2 gigs of ram, geforce 7600GT video card.  I've tried 4 TIMES!!!! to upgrade to Vista with the discs Dell provided to no avail, same error at the same process!!!!  WORKER THREAD RETURNED TO URL......or something like that  I don't want to do a clean install, but it looks like that's the only way for me. But  I'm not going to sweat it. I like XP:smileyvery-happy: It's running super! There is a lot of regret(problems) from people who have installed Vista and from people who bought their machine with Vista. I was fortunate in that every failed attempt to upgrade it reverted back to it's original state(XP). I just had to reinstall Roxio and Cineplayer. Scan over the threads in the forum and see if you see anything that might enlighten you. Good luck!:smileywink:

Honestly if you having this error - I don't think the clean full install will work either - I tried that and finally gave up -- I'm also happy with XP -- it will be quite a while before I attempt to install Vista again - IF EVER - and then I'll probably have a local computer guru to do it for me. At any rate - good luck !

I looked into that thread, It's really not for me cause I have 1 HD and I'm not looking to dual boot, also I did  go in a set raid to AUTODETECT but by default it is set to RAID ON , therefore  it blue screens upon boot up unless I insert the Vista DVD and boot from it, like I said I haven't try the clean install yet.

As much as I like my system as it is now, It's a real struggle trying to control my urge to get Vista installed(cause it's a new toy). I thought I might be one of the lucky ones who wouldn't have any problems doing the upgrade.........but like I said I'm not the only one! ANYBODY GOT SOME SUGGESTIONS???? Thanks!:smileyvery-happy:

I'm trying to use the Dell version which I received as an Express Upgrade when I purchase my XPS410  late November. I've attempted to do the upgrade option 4 times with same error each time. Really don't want  to do clean install but will if there is no other way to get Vista in.

Will upgrade work with the raid setting changed for raid on to autodetect. Will I still have an option to choose upgrade If I insert the Vista DVD to boot from after changing the raid setting?

This RAID issue and lack of support from Dell/Intel/Microsoft is what a lot of us XPS 410 owners have been complaining about for months! I have an XPS 410 with a RAID array 1 (mirrored) and Dell's "Datasafe" option (which, BTW, in NO LONGER OFFERED AS AN OPTION WITH THE XPS 410 AND VISTA PREINSTALLED). From what everyone is saying and what I've read elsewhere, this configuration won't work in Vista. I, of course, don't know first hand because Dell has not (sorry folks, can't finish this because Dell is filtering my comments but I think you know I registerd right after turkey time 2006 and I have yet to receive the goods from Dell).

It is not surprising to me at all that so many are having problems because even without actually having a functioning RAID array, others have said on this forum that Dell set RAID "on" in the OEM configuration.

So Dell ( Bill-B), DOES the RAID array (1, in my case) work with the Dell OEM Vista? Will I be able to continue to use the Dell Datasafe option with my RAID 1 array when I upgrade to Vista? Is this issue what is "white listing" my Express Upgrade?

I'm very curious to see if someone from Dell actually answers these questions.

PS - Please stop filtering comments about the Express Upgrade.

some one i hope this works for you i was surprised to that this was the problem and didnt think it would work either and also dont do the  custom do the upgrade because thats what i didand it worked and thats what the person told me to do and also do the one were its recommended like the one that is connected to the internet so it can get updates because this will install some of the updates that you have to delete or a better version of them so they dont conflict. and my computer restarted four times so dont panic when it does it might have been 5 so hope this works and make sure you dont take the disk out when it restarts or at anytime during the installation. it took me around 45 minutes to install vista (6700 2.66 dual core intel processor with 2 gigs of RAM and NVIdia 7300LE) if im correct the error you recieved was around 20-29% expanding files when the error or blue screen popped up because thats what happened for me so once its past the point where it happened for you wherever it was you should be safe and i hope it works any questions just reply back

Bill B,

THANK YOU for your reply! I am very pleased that somebody from Dell finally took the time to at least give me an answer.

"White listing" (a term used by others posting in outside articles about some of the real delays in the Express Upgrade situation with the manufacturers i.e. " Dell ")) is where a computer manufacturer like Dell, Gateway, HP, etc., puts out a list of computers with configurations that they (the OEM maufacturer) do not have working/stable drivers available for in the new Vista OS. Those computers have the Express Upgrades delayed until the manufacturer has developed a compatible & stable driver (for Dell I figured this applied to an XPS 410 with the RAID  array as there are stability problems with the Intel matrix drivers which would then cause a BSOD and give the error message the original post referred to).

Datasafe has not been offered with the currently available XPS 410's.  Norton acknowledges Norton Ghost v. 10's  incompatibility with Vista and a  new version of Norton Ghost is due out in April 2007 (will I be eligible for a free upgrade to it to continue to use Datasafe?).

Could you find out why so many are having problems with Vista and RAID arrays? I know some of it was due to the fact that people bought a commercial MS version of Vista without the drivers embedded but others on this board have said the Dell drivers on the DVD Assistant disk do not work with the 410 either. Is this incorrect?

Finally, if my computer isn't being delayed due to incompatibilty issues with drivers (RAID, nVidia video card, internal sound card Creative software, etc.) WHY haven't I received my Express Upgrade yet? I registered for it the FIRST day the upgrade site was open (November 29, 2006) and have heard nothing. Many others who registered long after I did have already received their upgrade. This is definitely NOT "first-in-first-out." This is pertinent to this thread because many have said the delay is due to compatibility issues such as RAID arrays causing a BSOD (and the listed error code) and installation failure of Vista Home Premium on an XPS 410.

Thank you again for addressing this.

Bill B:
I have the exact same issue that is described in this thread (XPS 410 - BSOD when trying to load Vista).  I was using the Dell OEM Vista upgrade disc, on a system that is less than two months old (and was purchased as "Vista Ready").  In my case, I tried the upgrade 1st, then the clean install (which wiped out the restore partition on my HD) - both of which failed (I've since re-installed XP - but have lost the factory restore option due to the format).   I've found the posts from Chandler that you mentioned, but haven't tried his work-around - I've been waiting for Dell to address the problem.  I honestly didn't expect a Dell rep to refer to a work-around posted here - are you folks going to address this issue or not?  Maybe some of the $$ I paid for my system should go to Chandler....  Could you repond to let the numerous folks (search for similar posts if you don't believe that a lot of people have this issue) here know when we can expect an "official" fix from Dell?

PS - I'm glad that someone from Dell has actually posted about this issue - thanks at least for that!

Thanks Bill B - Nothing personal here - I'm just hoping that I end up with what I paid for.  I appreciate your help, and look forward to this getting resolved.

Thanks again Bill B, but on the post directly ahead of mine, there is somebody with the exact RAID/driver issues I am trying to address. It's very confusing to me since you're telling me the drivers work yet I keep seeing posts where they don't and also to try a "work around" by ChandlerL.

Is the issue with the particular people not following Dell's directions when upgrading or are the Intel Matrix drivers unstable?

PS - Do you know why I haven't received the upgrade after registering for it in November?

I also have a XPS410 that had this error when trying the express upgrade.  I have 2gb ram, NVidia 7900 video, dvd writer and reader.

Hello DELL - Bill B:
Just for an update - I tried again last night to install Vista on my XPS 410 (yes, I know, what was I thinking....).  Anyways, after running both the Windows and Dell upgrade advisor programs, I was told that there were no imcompatibility issues with my system.  Once again, I got the "Worker_Thread" BSOD once the program started to load.  I then re-booted and set RAID to auto-detect and booted again (trashing my XP).  This time, Vista began the install, but couldn't find a source to install to (was asking for mass storage device drivers).  I went to my other system and downloaded the Intel drivers that ChandlerL recommended to a USB flash drive, and tried to use them.  The system didn't recognize them as compatible with my set-up.  I did the same for the XP drivers available from Dell (you don't have any for Vista, only the Intel Matrix application) - same result.  I switched back to "RAID On" and tried again (isn't the definition of insanity trying the same thing over and over, but expecting a different result?) - BSOD again.  I even disconnected my 2nd HD and repeated everything - same results.  I am going to try a clean re-install of XP with RAID off to see if I can upgrade from that....  Hopefully, you (Dell) will have an answer soon.
