You should post this in the Vista forum. Bios updates should be installed before upgrading to Vista. Have you tried right clicking on the file and selecting Run as Administrator? If that didn't work I think you need to login as the hidden Main administrator to update the bios. Are you sure you need this bios update? What bios do you have now? Bios updates should be attempted only for urgent problems. From Help, Bios FAQ's: "Updating BIOS should only be done if necessary (to solve a compatibility problem, for example). It can be a complicated process, and if an error occurs, your computer could be rendered inoperable. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly." Don't do it when there is any chance of a power interruption. BTW, the 4600 is not a good candidate for Vista. If you are having problems, you might want to reconsider going back to XP.
I am running bios A07. The reason I want to update the bios is related to my PC running extremely slow for the last few years and I have tried everything I can think of to get to the bottom of the problem. I have another thread about these problems.
How do I log in as the main hidden administrator?
You say the 4600 is not great for Vista - any reason why? I get a good performance score (4.2).

Just to let you know I successfully installed the bios update on my dimension 4600.
I ended up using Nero 7 to create a bootable CDROM with the bios file on it but when I started the PC and got to the dos prompt I could not locate the D4600A12.exe file.
I therefore went back into windows and copied the file into the root of my C directory and then restarted using the boot disk again.
This time I changed the prompt to C:\
And then typed D4600A12.exe and it did the BIOS update.
Thank goodness I was around in the days when people used DOS:)
