Problem Solved - Finding the cd writing task menu

SP2 had knocked out my cd rom write capabilities.  I wasn't able to get a satisfactory response here so I went to Microsoft online tech support.  Here's what they sent me.  Step 1 didn't work.  Step 2 did....

Thank you for choosing Online Support for your Microsoft Technical Support offering. My name is Nansen, and I will be assisting you with this service request. For your reference, the Case ID of this service request is SRZ040925001683.

To give the most accurate support possible, I would like to give a brief summary of your concern as I understand it.

After installing Windows XP Service Pack 2, you cannot create a new CD with the CD-RW, since the related task has disappeared.

If I have misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.

This issue may occur if the CD-RW is not recognized by Windows XP SP2 properly, we can use the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.

Step 1:
=====
1. Click Start, click Run, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.
2. Locate the following registry key by double clicking each branch.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. In the right panel, please delete both "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" entries if they exist.
4. Restart the computer and test the issue.

If the issue persists, please continue to Step 2.

Step 2:
=====
1. Click Start, click Run, type "devmgmt.msc" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.
2. Locate the "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" category and expand it.
3. Right click the "Secondary IDE Channel" item and click "Uninstall".
4. Restart the computer.
5. Please refer to the following Knowledge Base article to burn files onto a Recordable CD by means of Windows XP's built-in CD Recording feature.

Description of CD-ROM Recording in Windows XP
(couldn't get this to send with the proper URL of the page for the instructions.  You know, Dell could be a little more supportive! It's like they don't want to tell you how to fix anything yet they don't want you to tell anyone where you found the fix for it either.)

The next step was to run msinfo32 and send them my system info but there was no need to since step 2 fixed the problem.  Restarting caused the device to be reinstalled.  The only thing additional I did was unchecked READ ONLY in properties.

As soon as it was installed properly, the cd write tasks menu, which had been missing, showed back up in the left hand menu of my Windows Explorer.  I also uninstalled Direct CD from Roxio which had never worked in the first place in the 2 years I've owned this Dell.
