It can be upgraded to xp . . I have done it on several 4100's . . the fix is to do a clean install . .  . my experience is that it will load all drivers for the system . . be sure and disconnect printers, scanners and any other perif's not internal . . and if you have an internal zip drive, be sure and disconnect it until afrer the install.

A good guide is here

have fun . .wrs

Have you checked Dell downloads to see if your computer can be upgraded to XP? If it can and you can boot from the CD I would do a clean install. There are many software drivers that aren't compatible, even mouse drivers are a problem. Get all the updates before you start and make sure and put the XP firewall on there until it is updated and your virus program is fully updated. Lots of people have gotten the Blaster worm immediately after they hit the internet. Get your chipset drivers on first also. This will eliminate lots of problems you might bump into.

I leave the network connected . . the files and settings wizard on the XP install disc works really well . . I have used it several times and it saves a lot of time setting up the new system.  You run it prior to installing XP and save the results to a partition that will not be formated or to removeable media . . once you have XP installed and updated, run it agian to move your files and settings to the new installation . . other than passwords, it will usually copy all perishable data to the new install.

good luck . . wrs

I know my 4100 can be upgraded. I now have ME and what I have been reading that can be the problem. I will disconnect everything before installing XP. What about my cable modem and router? It might be a couple of days before I get ready. I will transfer some files to zip and my portable.

This might not be the proper way to do things but  I'm hooked to the internet through the whole install. I even left my wireless PC card  in. All I have to do is rightclick and connect it to the router.  Also my Intellimouse. XP has the drivers for it. I do turn all my peripherals off. if there are any.
