Well I did it and I got the results I expected.

1) Intel storage console worked fine
2) Needed to reactivate windows
3) Online activation failed because it said the product key was already in use
4) Phone activation worked
5) When I check control panel -> system it says that windows is activated but instead of the little genuine logo to the right I have a link to "get genuine"
6) when I follow this link I can check if windows is genuine and it says I am not and that I need to activate first.

Help - I think this has something to do with Intel storage manage corrupting the validation file on my pc. Is there any way to uninstall this file or active x control and have a new one installed when I revisit the validation site?

Hi down_under:
I have done my clean reinstall of my VISTA yesterday. I for some unknown reasons could not load my small version of the IMSM during my VISTA clean installation at the point "where do you want to install windows" [load driver].
However I continued with the format and clean installation and it was uneventful. On complition I activated the VISTA on line.  Afterwards [I have been guided by desperate-iastor] I decided to go and install this small version of the IMSM and afterwards it requested my VISTA to be reactivated [as expected from this thread]. I was again able to reactivate on linewithout any difficulty. However as you have stated when I checked if genuine it suggested it may not be genuine.

Now here is what I did to get it Genuine.
I went back to control->device manager->Rolled back the Intel 82081 driver.
Now I have to reactivate the VISTA [I expected this]. Then in the same window I clicked to see if it was genuine. It suggested to be genuine to install active X control which I went ahead.
Then again I went back to the control->Device manager->update the Driver. This updated to the latest IMSM.
As expected computer requested to restart to get the change effect.
I restarted and went to control->system-> I found it as expected three days to activate the VISTA.
Now I clicked to activate on line and activated without any difficulty.
Now you click the windows to see if genuine and I find it is recognised as genuine!
I am happy now

Hey Snowshine - great work. I admire your persistence. I worked around the problem by installing the last of the v6 IMSM. It's doing everything I need and above all it is stable. Nevertheless I won't be able to stay on this version for ever so I will keep you solution at the ready.

Hey,

I noticed that Intel released the latest version of IMSM on 2nd August (v 7 .6.0.1011). The release notes don't mention anything about fixing Windows Genuine problems but does anyone know if it does? I don't want to install it until I know that the problem has been fixed. I really don't want to be spending the next day or so rebuilding my computer if it doesn't work.

I have already answered in my edited response.
I did not require to activate this time round after the installment of the lates IMSM.
It may be that on the last time round we updated the IMSM& the Chipset together, this may have been too many changes to the hardware and hence prompted us to reactivate the windows [This is just my theory!!]

The problem whereby you have to revalidate windows after you upgrade ISMS. Last time I tried, phone activation allowed my os to be activated but the os was not considered genuine. Ended up having to reinstall vista and revert to an earlier version of ISMS.
