Problem with USB External RW

Question

Hey gang, I had a question about Windows 2000, I just bought a USB 2.0 compatible External CD-RW, but when I plug it in I get a 'Page fault- non page area' or other blue screen errors, anything I can do? The burner in question is a liteon 40x24x40 burner...and I think I do not have USB 2.0 but it said it would be backwards compatible. Pretty much figured that it would have to be the burner, seeing as when I plug it in, I get the blue screen of death after a few minutes. If you know anything about this (tips of upgrading to USB 2.0 is NOT appreciated btw lol)...I would greatly appreciate it seeing as this is frustrating. I already burned two CD's with it too, so I know the thing works, it's just that this problem is now popping up. Thanks in advance.
