Problems after system restore
I did a full restore this weekend (with CDs). Everything works now, but it takes about two hours for everything to get to running "normal". Did I do something wrong? How can this be fixed? Thanks for any/all help.

Sound like you migh not have reloaded all your system drivers and software in the proper oder. Take a look at THIS LINK on the proper way to reload you drivers. My feeling is you did not reinstall the chipset driver
You can find all these drivers and such on the Drivers and download page for your system.
If you post your model number and os we can provide the link to the drivers page.

Doub'e check the official Dell 'How to Reinstall Microsoft Windows XP' article, to make sure you installed XP correctly, then check Dave's link, to make sure you then installed the drivers in the correct order.
The drivers are the more important of the two though.
Since you reinstalled from the OS disc - rather than doing a restore from a 'Recovery' partition, can you confirm you booted from the XP disc, and (quick-) reformatted the hard drive first :emotion-55:

Yes, I rechecked the "how to reinstall" and am confident I did that right. Also am sure that I did the quick reformat. Unsure about the order of the drivers though. How do I correct this mistake?

The two most important drivers are the desktop system software and the chipset. these two(if there is destop software) set up all the communication between the system hardware and os.
There really is only one or two things. Try installing the destop system software in normal mode. Install the chipset driver in Safe mode. If this does not work then you are most likely looking at doing a complet reinstall again.
