Problems loading windows after trying to install some software

Question

My mum recieved a CD from BT Yahoo containing software updates and when she tried to install it the computer froze and nothing would work so she turned the computer off. Now when the computer is turned on a screen comes up saying that windows can't be loaded because of a software or hardware problem. There are about 5 options that you can select including 'Start windows normally' and 'Safe Mode' but none of the options work. The black windows screen appears which is faded and none of the keys can be used on the keyboard. I tried to follow the solution on one of your other messages which mentions a similar problem after installing a Yahoo CD but nothing happens. I can't follow the method of starting the computer in the last working state because I can't get the computer to get to the windows desktop so i can't use the start menu etc. Please help. Also the system is making a strange noise. Thanks in anticipation.

did you install sbc yahoo DSL??

I'm not sure if it is the sbc yahoo dsl one. What does sbc mean? I have tried to follow the solution given by a dell advisor at the top of the forum but I can't get anything to work. I don't know what to do other than taking it to a computer shop.
