problems reformatting

Hi, I am trying to reformat my computer and have managed to reformat the D drive, but it will not allow me to reformat the C drive, a message comes up saying "Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again."
As far as I am aware, there are no other utilities etc open - however, we have been having problems with processes running in the background (which shouldnt be). Could these be affecting the format option? We have tried spyware, adaware and virus check. Not sure what else to do, any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

mahjongg,

OEM is Original Equipment Manufacturer. An OEM version of an operating system is one which is provided along with a computer, as opposed to a retail version which is for sale separately. Dell copies of XP are preactivated (again, in the US, I can't speak for the UK) and should not prompt for a Product ID.

(msgale--Didn't mean to jump in, but I checked to make sure you were offline before sticking my horn in.)

So, where does that leave me. Am I preactivated? Will look on comp tomorrow to see if i can find a code. If i am preactiveated, why cant I reformat my C drive? Tks peeps for your time and interest.

PS. I have loaded the operating system disc and it prompts for the code.

Thanks for all your support, have managed to do it. We went into the start up menu and changed it so that it booted from the cd. Now have a much quicker computer. Tks again
