Not sure of the problem, maybe running programs? That's why when I defrag my HD I do it in "Safe Mode" this way nothing but the essentials are running.
msil217, I think you might be on to something with this pagefile thing. I did recently change my pagefile size to "system managed size". I found PageDefrag from Sysinternals.com but I'd rather not use a "third party" utility if there's a way I could do it myself. Guess I've got some more reading to do. You gave me a direction in which to look, anyway. Thanks, Sally

Odius, Thanks for your reply. I've not used Safe Mode for defragging before but I always unplug from the net and shut everything down (screen saver, nav, firewall, etc.) and have never had this problem before. Sally

Check "Turn off system restore" (on all drives).
