Not sure of the problem, maybe running programs? That's why when I defrag my HD I do it in "Safe Mode" this way nothing but the essentials are running.

If you use system restore, (and if you don't think you will need it right away) turn it off.
Start--Right click "My Computer", click  "properties"--- click system restore (tab)
Check "Turn off system restore" (on all drives).
Defrag. Then turn system restore back on.
This has worked for me in the past.
If that doesn't work, then it must be your page files that are fragmented.
That would require a different method.

msil217, I think you might be on to something with this pagefile thing. I did recently change my pagefile size to "system managed size". I found PageDefrag from Sysinternals.com but I'd rather not use a "third party" utility if there's a way I could do it myself. Guess I've got some more reading to do. You gave me a direction in which to look, anyway. Thanks, Sally

OPPS!  Looks like a "third party" utility is a necessity!  Maybe Diskeeper?

Odius, Thanks for your reply. I've not used Safe Mode for defragging before but I always unplug from the net and shut everything down (screen saver, nav, firewall, etc.) and have never had this problem before. Sally
