You are trying to install an older update. Net Framework is up to 1.1 now. You don't need to do anything more. Just visit the Windows Update site and let it scan your computer to verify you are up to date.

.NET framework 1.0 has its own udates, SP1, SP2, SP3.

.NET framework 1.1 can be installed along side .NET framework 1.0, it is not an update for it but an expanded version. It has its own SP1 (different from that of .NET framework 1.0). There was recently also a security update for .NET framework 1.1 SP1.

Check in Add/remove which you have.

For 1.1

and its SP1:

Mary is right that most software requiring .NET framework these days will need 1.1. Those requiring 1.0 will generally also work under 1.1.

There is also a .NET framework 2.0, in beta.

Thanks for all your help. I did look in the Add/ Remove program and I have the following .Net Framework versions installed. They are: Microsoft.NET Framework (English) v1.0.3705,  Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1, and Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix(KB886903). Do I need to install any more versions or security updates besides these 3 versions? I have a Dell 2400 computer with Windows XP Home Edition SP2 installed. Please reply, as soon as possible. Thank you.

Dear Mary,

Thanks for all your help. I checked on the Add/Remove programs that I have on my computer. I have 3 versions of .Net Framework installed. They are: Microsoft. Net Framework (English) v1.0.3705, Microsoft.Net Framework 1.1, and Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 Hotfix (KB886903). I don't understand if the Security Update for Microsoft.NET Framework Version 1.0 SP3 English (KB886906) is an older version that I don't need, than why does the Windows Update Site keepprompting me to install it?  Being that I have the 3 versions installed, do I still need to install anymore versions of .Net Framework? I have a Dell 2400 computer with Windows XP Home Edition, Security Pack 2 installed. Please reply, as soon as possible. Thank you.

v 1.0.3705 is .NET framework 1.0.

v 1.1.4322 is .NET framework 1.1

As I said they exist side by side, their files are in the subfolders of C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework

It does no harm to have both.

Hotfix 886906 is a hotfix for .NET framework 1.0 SP3

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=886906

Maybe you installed that hotfix before installing .NET framework 1.0 SP3. Then when you try to install SP3, it won't because some files are later versions installed by the hotfix. You could try uninstalling the hotfix from add/remove, then install SP3 and then reinstall the hotfix. Or if you prefer, you can uninstall that hotfix, then uninstall .NET framework 1.0, since you also have .NET framework 1.1.

.NET framework 1.0 SP3 is here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a5a02311-194b-4c00-b445-f92bec03032f&DisplayLang=en

There is also a hotfix 886903 for .NET framework 1.1 SP1. It was issued on Feb 8 2005

If you have not installed SP1 for .NET framework 1.1, it is here:

Install that before installing hotfix 886903.

Hope that clears up any confusion.
