Problems with Win98 SE recovery CD - oemsetup not found

I'm trying to downgrade a Dell 667 computer from Win XP back to Win98 SE (so that older kid's computer games can be played on it). When I use the boot diskette, it comes back with the message oemsetup.exe is not found (on the recovery CD). The recovery CD does not have this file, or any executable file to allow Win98 to install. There is a reference to a fix for this problem in the forum, but the link is no good. How do I use the recovery CD to revert this computer back to Win98 from XP?

You may not need to, reverting to W98 is no easy task, what games are your boys trying to run on XP, old DOS games??

XP will run most older games if you know how.

The programs that won't work under XP include Barbie Ocean Discovery for Win 95 & 3.1 and Broderbund Orlys's Draw-a-Story from 1996. Both worked with 98. I've tried using Program Compatibility Mode to get them working, but no luck. If you know how to get these older programs working, I'm all ears. Jennifer Alberta, Canada

The Windows 98SE installation disk is bootable.  If your Dell can be set to boot from the CD ROM drive you can perform the restore.

If some of those older games are DOS games (win 95 and 3.1), you can use DOSbox to run them in XP

about the broderbund game. Uninstall the game, then read this

other possible issues with that game

win 98 is a real pain to reinstall, and find all the drivers. Avoid it at all costs, trust me.

I don't really disagree with mombodog, but if you have an L series machine as I suspect you do, Dell still has the drivers for Windows 98.  If you can make his suggestions work for you, however, it's probably easier than going through a reinstallation.

Yes, it's an L667r.

Thanks so much for the help. I'll try out the DosBox and the Broderbund's directions and see how it works. I really wanted to revert to 98 because I also have a scanner (Visioneer 7600 USB) that isn't supported by XP, but I suppose I could just buy a newer, faster, better quality scanner to use with my Vista computer.

Thanks,
Jennifer
