Product setup problems with mcafee security center

I've just bought a Dell Inspiron 5160 that came with a pre-installed mcafee security center. Whenever I try to register through Product setup I continually get "the page cannot be displayed" once I've submit my details. I've amended my firewall privacy settings on XP and Mcafee to ensure they aren't blocking any mcafee sites. I've also amended my explorer security settings after advice from mcafee. Nothing seems to work. Anybody got any ideas that can save my sanity?

I want you to run a few simple tests:

Try going to the following sites:  ( Write back, and please specify what appears on the screen, and also, in the Address bar of  your Explorer window)

www.symantec.com

www.trendmicro.com

www.grisoft.com

If they all behave identically, I think I may know what's going on... and if so, we'll proceed to the next step.

Also, can you check to see if your hard drive contains any of the following files:

msmbw.exe

formatsys.exe

serbw.exe

What happens if you go to START / RUN and type in REGEDIT and hit OKAY?  (If the Registry Editor pops up okay, just click on the X to close it; do NOT play with this program)

Are you running Microsoft MESSENGER ?   And if so, do you recall downloading any files that someone may have sent you through it?

based on the tests results, the "hunch" that I had does NOT apply to your case, so I cannot proceed to offer you any more help.   Perhaps someone else reading this thread has another idea?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I tried all 3 websites and they appeared with no problems at the front page of each site

I searched and could not find any of the 3 exe files

No I haven't been using Microsoft Messenger

The Registry Editor popped up OK when I ran REGEDIT

Additional info : I logged onto the mcafee website OK via a different PC using my login details that I've been trying to use in the Product setup (although in my account information I wasnt subscribed to anything). My new laptop is still forcing me to the Product Setup when I request updates and still gives me the error message.

Interestingly I have had to reply to this post from another PC becasue when I tried to submit it from my new laptop I got (you guessed it) "The page cannot be displayed"!!

Good news - I have been able to resolve my problem by simply switching to a new ISP. Not sure why this caused such a problem as I have used my old ISP for years on my previous machine with no problems.

Thanks for taking the time to have a look anyway.
