Hi APieroth,

I had written this earlier too.. but did not get to know if the issue got fixed or not. Request you to try this lengthy solution and update me if it worked or not.

This problem generally occurs when the firewall on the system blocks a windows component update or leave an update incomplete. That corrupts the s/w distribution foler and thereby causing the error.

The resolution is a bit lengthy one and success is not guaranteed either. No harm in trying though.

Click Start-> Run, type services.msc and click ok button.
Double click on the Automatic Updates service. Click on the "Log On" tab and make sure the option "Local System account is selected and the option "Allow Service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.
Check if this service has been enabled and the listed hardware profile. If not, please click the Enable button to enable it.
Click on the General tab. Make sure the Startup type is set to "Automatic". Then please click the start button if it is not already started.
Repeat the same above steps for the Background Intelligent Transfer Service(BITS).

Then Click Start -> run, type REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL and press Enter key.
You should get a success message. Click Ok on it.
Repeat this for the following files as well.
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

After this, click Start -> Run and type cmd. Click Ok button.

type net stop WuAuServ
Click Start -> Run and type %windir% and press Enter.

Locate the folder SoftwareDistribution  and rename it to SDold.

Click Start -> Run and type cmd and click OK button.
type net start WuAuServ

Reboot the system and verify if you still get the error.

Happy troubleshooting.

Cheers,
Maddy

Hi Maddy,

thank you very much for trying to help me.
Unfortunatly this did not solve the problem :-(

I did everything exactly the way you wrote.

The Automatic Update Service had been set to "Local System Account" with "allow Service to interact with desktop" unchecked.

I had to start the BITS and switch the Startup Type from "manual" to "automatic".

I've registered all the files you said and got a success message after every file.

I've stopped the Automatic Update Service, renamed the SoftwareDistribution Folder, and started the AU-Service again.

After reboot I've switched from user 1 to user 2 an back
and the applications started crashing again :-(

Regards,

Andreas

Hi APieroth,

Thanks for your update. Apologies that the long try did not work. The next thing that I have heard of it is to edit registry. Run regedit and find the following key :- HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler Delete the "Default" value then close. Restart your computer.

You may also want to try this .

Keep updating.

Cheers,
Maddy.

Hi Maddy,

no, sorry, no joy.
Applications keep crashing.
I'm now reinstalling my system step by step to find out, which driver or application injects the problem into my system. I've got the basic setup with all service packs an updates for windows, as well as most of the drivers. No problem so far.

CU,

Andreas
