Programs flash on screen, and won't open

Question

:( Greetings!
I an having a problem with my programs not running in XP Media Center 2005. When I try to open an executable file(meaning any program except IE7), the window of the program flashes, then closes. I have cleaned up everything - including the registry. I tried System Restore to a clean restore point, but the problem still persists. I went to Microsoft and tried to restore my Add and Remove because I originally thought it was only Add and Remove. What should I do to solve this problem?

Can I assume the system is free of malware?

If you can get it to run, try Windows System File Check:
click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click ok

Insert XP CD if sfc requests it and reboot when it's done.

Thank you RoHe! I was suspicios of the last program I had installed so I removed it and it still would not run. After I followed your instructions, the computer did a chk disk routine on restart. It replaced the corrupt XP files and everything is great!  Dell Forums always solves my problem before Microsoft! Thanks.
