Question, about a Driver

I will try to explain, the best that I can. The other day, when I turned my computer on, a box popped up, and said found new hardare-driver, Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc Modem, am not even sure what that is. I did not do anything, to my computer, to have it added to my computer, my computer added it, without me knowing it. When, I click on it, to see what it means, then it disappears, and I can not find it on my computer, anywhere. And it re-appears again, when I turn my computer on. Can, you tell me, how to find it, and if it is safe, to uninstall it, or not? Thanks.

ps, my computer, is a Dell, 2400 Dimension, with Windows XP. 

What model Dell do you have?  Secondly , right clikc My Computer and go to properties and then to the Hardware Tab then to Device manager.  is there anything in there with a yellow exclamation mark?

The PCI Simple Communications Controller is likley you Modem . . you can download the driver and isntall it . .

  My model of Dell is System Model Dimension 2400, is that what you mean? I have Windows XP.

 & I did what you ask me to do, & it shows a yellow question mark, then it says Other devices, and then below that, is another yellow question mark, with a yellow exclamation mark on it, and it says PCI Simple Communications Controller, what is it for? And how come it appeared, on my computer, without me knowing about it. And do I need it now, since I have not had it on my computer before, if I do not need it, is it safe to remove it? If it is safe, then please can you tell me how to remove it from my computer?      Modem, for my computer? how can that be? Since I have been using my Dell computer, without the PCI Simple Communications Controller, for over 3 years now, so I know that my Dell, does have a Modem to it, and I have downloaded and installed the PCI Simple Communications Controller, more than once, but when I do that, then it disappears, and I can not find it, but then when I start my computer again, the box pops up again, and says found new hardware again, it might be a update for the Modem, for my computer, if it is, then once downloaded update, then the box should stop appearing, when I start my computer, then it should say updated, and I should be able to find it then, but I can not find it. And the box appears, how can I stop that? This has been going on, for about 4 days now.

What type of internet connection do you have?

I have DSL internet connection.

The internal modem has nothing to do with your ISP connection.  Just run the driver install packeage and the message should go away.  Or you can disable the modem all together.

  I have run the driver install package, more than once, and the message, still appears again, found new hardware, whenever I start my computer again. So, how do I disable it, to stop the message? I have even removed it, from my Add & Remove Programs more than once, was not sure, that I should, but I did, but the message still appears, whenever, I start my computer again.

Two things to do.  Go to the Device Manager, find the modem , right click and uninstall it.  Reboot and let Windows reinstall it.  If you still get the message, go back to the device manager, right click and disable it.

   Thanks so much,  for your help. I went to Device Manager & I found the modem, right clicked, and uninstalled it. & I rebooted, and let Windows reinstall it. & I still got the message again, so I went back to Device Manager, right clicked, and I disable it, that worked, no message appears then, once again, thanks.

No problem.  The only thing quirky about uninstalling and rebooting is that the device will always look for the old driver so you must either delete or rename the old driver , then point to the new driver for a successful install.

  Now, you have totally lost me, as far as I know, my computer never had a driver on it, called Conexant D850 56K V.9x DFVc Modem, PCI Simple Communications Controller, until it appeared by itself, awhile back. It is still on my computer, but disabled, and when I right click on it, it says update driver, or scan for hardware changes, I have not clicked on either. But at least the message, does not appear anymore, when I start my computer. Thanks again.

It's not a driver, it's a device (dial-up modem) that utilizes that driver package.
