More than likely Java is uninstalled, it just did not clean up folders, delete all folders related to Java, skip any labeled Sun, then install the latest version of Java.

If there is more than 1 uninstaller for java in add/remove programs list, uninstall all of them first.

Attention: mombodog

I interpret your 12-11-2007 suggestions with respect to my post as follows: delete only the folder Java defined in the following paths:

1. C:\Windows\Sun\Java
2. C:\Windows\Application Data\Sun\Java
3. C:\Program Files\Java
4. C:\Program files\Common files\Java
5. C:\Windows\Java

and delete the current setup program, JRE-1_5_0_12-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe, defined by this path

6. C:\Desktop\ JRE-1_5_0_12-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe

I believe the preceding actions action would then leave the Sun folders intact.

Am I correctly interpreting your comment? I could then proceed to download the newer version Sun Java setup for my system. Thanking you in advance.

I would leave # 1 and #2 alone for now, delete 3-6, then install latest version of Java.

"downloaded the setup program, jre-1_5_0_14-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe"

Latest version is 1.6.0.3

But not sure it is for ME...

Ever think of upgrading that PC to XP?

Momodog: I followed your recommendations on deletions in your 12/14/2007 post. I then:

1. downloaded the setup program, jre-1_5_0_14-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe,
2. executed it which successfully installed Sun Java.
3  tested it per the Sun Java site which displayed it as successful.

However when trying to run the Trendmicro HouseCall-Free Online Virus and Spyware Scan, I get a Sun Java error message:

A first paragraph says:"Java support is disabled on your system or no Java runtime environment is installed. If you want to use the Java-based housecall kernel, please enable or installa Java runtime enviornment version 1.4 or higher."

A second paragraph talks about java.com

A third paragraph says: "If your runtime environment is up-to-date but you are still receiving this message, please close your browser window and open TrendMicro in a new window."

I have learned that the Trend Micro HouseCall Software requirement is IE6.0 or later. At the moment, I only have IE 5.5 and not IE 6.0 or later. I presume this is the real issue which needs to be resolved on another day.

Thanks for your advice.
