Oops...just to expand on what we have, normally when you try to download a program, you get the option to either run or save and if you choose save, you can select a destination. Well when he downloads a program, it does not even give him the option to run, only to save. And when he clicks on save, no other menu/choice opens, the file automatically goes to the downloads file.

May depend on a browser setting, but you didn't say what browser is being used, and whether you both have the same version and same settings

Are you sure that malware removal site is safe? A lot of those sites claim you have malware or actually give you malware and then charge you to remove it. Or they just charge you, but don't remove it so they can secretly infect your system. Be careful!! :emotion-5:

If it's a Dell PC, you can use Dell's malware removal forum for free, and those guys are great!

Thanks Ron. Your response addresses my main question with all this, is this an OS issue or a browser issue? We run the same OS but not browsers. I'm running IE (and have Firefox as a backup since IE is buggy on a few sites i use) and he uses Firefox. I did get into Firefox and saw how to select destinations for saving programs. I tried a few downloads and did notice that firefox is not as intuitive or clear about running a download instead of saving as opposed to IE. But it looks like that is the solution to the problem.  As for the malware site, it's safe. he's using Spywarehammer...very reputable (and unfortunately, I too had to use it, with excellent results). Actually, what got him messed up WAS a fake malware removal site that started downloading a nasty payload to his system. I think he's getting close to being cleaned up but he was having to download and run various programs and that's when this whole issue came up. Again, thanks.

Glad I helped to answer your question.

BTW: Many of the experts at Spyhammer are also  the experts in Dell's malware removal forum. The Spyhammer website doesn't have all the 'road-blocks' the experts encounter on Dell's malware forum so they find it easier to work there. :emotion-5:
