Try removing any Quicken shortcuts from the Startup folder. Also stop any Quicken icons on the taskbar including Reminders, Schedulers, billminder, etc. by right clicking on them and closing. Also in Quicken, go to Edit, Customize Online Preferences, Connection, uncheck everything there so Quicken doesn't try to phone home when you exit. Before shutting down, do a Cntl Alt Del and see what Quicken processes are running so you can troubleshoot further.

Hello, Mary G gives good advice but it may not be necessary to turn everything off.  Quicken "support" is unhelpful.  The most common reason your Quicken doing this is a communication problem with quicken.com  Be certain you have provided the correct information in your internet setup.  Quicken will contact quicken.com as it closes to send a backup of your data.  If there is a problem with the connection, your program seems to hang while Quicken tries to make a contact.

That's a good idea on checking on your Internet setup in Quicken. Connecting to Quicken.com at shutdown is not required and not set up automatically. Personally, I don't use Quicken.com for backup or acct access. I don't like having personal account info out there in Cyberspace. I suggested turning off the "extras" until the hangup at shutdown can be traced. Quicken has an annoying habit of quietly adding all sorts of "phone home" programs at installation that are not necessary.

Many thanks Mary G and Paindoc for the good advice.  My internet connection seems to be OK.  I tried most of the other things, but I confess I didn't have the nerve to take the one item labelled "Quicken" off my startup menu.  My computer still wouldn't shut down, though.  Then I got through to an Intuit chat line, where my helper said:  open Quicken -->Edit-->Preferences-->Customize Online Update-->press [Shift]4-->answer "yes" to disable Quicken Download Manager Driver.  Close Quicken and tell your computer to restart, rather than shut down.  As it is rebooting, go into safe mode (on my Dimension 8100 with Windows ME, that means hold the [Control] key while it is rebooting).  From there you can shut down your computer.  It's a little slow, but IT WORKS!!!
