Quicken won't initialize properly. Quicken says XP software problem. HELP!!

Sorry, I'm new to this.  Never hit return until you're finished typing!  OK, On tuesday I tried to open Quicken 2005 and I got an error message saying "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006).  I spent an hour on the phone with Quicken and nothing changed.  I then got Norton System works and installed and ran that.  Norton Disk Doctor said I was missing program files and couldn't fix it.  So now when I try to start up Quicken it says "The ordinal 2248 could not be located in the dynamic link library MFC71.DLL."  I spent two hours today with Quicken and they surmised that it is a system problem. 

I then called dell and since I can't afford $99.00 for their tech I tried the online chat option.  They sent me info about installing the recovery console.  when I put in my Windows XP CD and try to Run I386\winnt32.exe/cmdcons I get the message that it doesn't exist.  I have Service Pack 2 installed so I wouldn't even want to reinstall the old XP.  PLUS, dell doesn't even know if this will help the problem. 

Does anyone have any ideas what is going on with the XP system that  won't allow this program to run?

Typing accuracy is everything when working with the DOS-like commands of XP. To install Recovery Console as a boot option place the XP CD in its drive. Then go to Start|Run, enter cmd and click OK. At the command prompt that opens enter the following, substituting the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive for X:

x:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

Note that there is a space between exe and /.

This, however, only adds Recovery Console to your boot menu and does nothing to address your problem.

The original problem stems from a something irregular with MFC71.DLL. Since you have Windows XP SP2 installed, the version of MFS71.DLL you have is the one also available for download from here. Download it to your hard drive, then copy it to the C:\Windows\system32 folder. You may receive the warning that the file already exists. If so, allow the new copy to write over it.

Post back with the results.\

If Denny's solution doesn't fix the problem, you might want to run a full system file check:
click start>run
type in: sfc /scannow
(space between sfc and /)
click ok

sfc will check all the XP system files and replace any that are missing or damaged. It takes ~45 min to run and may ask for your XP CD.

MFC71.DLL is not a part of XP, but rather of Visual Studio .Net. (I'm not sure how it came to be installed on my computer.) It is not included in the I386 folder of XP nor represented in the dllcache folder so I doubt that SFC would have any effect.

You're a genius.  Your suggestion fixed my problem.  I just had to reinstall Quicken and I now know how much money I have (not much!!)  Thank you a thousand times.

I have copies of MFC71.DLL in both c:\i386 and in c:\windows\system32 on my 8400 with XPpro SP2 so that's why I assumed sfc would replace it, even if it needs the XP CD to do it.

Based on this Microsoft article it appears to be part of Windows, but vendors may have to redistribute MFC71.dll with their product if it links to the MFC library so that may be why you thought it was part of Visual Studio.Net.

After reading this doc, I not sure which folder Quicken may want MFC71.dll to be in.
