Processes sound high so something is running in the background.
Click start>run
type in: msconfig
click ok
Click Startup tab, uncheck everything, except items related to antiviral software, firewall, mouse, video, keyboard, iaanotf. Just about everything else can be unchecked safely. Exit msconfig and reboot. You'll get message about 'selective startup' or 'diagnostics' mode. Put check in box "Don't show this...". Is the problem fixed? If so, then something on that startup tab may have been trying to 'phone home' for updates. RealPlayer, Adobe, MusicMatch, Sonic, etc are all guilty of that. They don't need to start everytime you boot, but will still be available when/if you want them.
